국문 초록

거북선은 전라좌수사 이순신이 1592년에 창제한 장갑함이다. 임진왜란 시기 그 거북선의 기능을 살펴본 결과는 다음과 같았다. 첫째, 거북선은 함대의 선두에서 돌격선 기능을 수행하였다. 거북선 선장은 돌격장(突擊將)으로 전투편성 되었다. 둘째, 거북선은 함포 공격 기능을 수행하였다. 거북선은 대형 함포인 천자총통, 지자총통, 현자총통, 황자총통을 탑재하였다. 이들 총통은 통나무로 만들어진 대형 화살인 대장군전이나 장군 전 또는 탄환 수십발을 발사하였다. 셋째, 거북선은 목재 운반 기능을 수행하였다. 임진왜란 시기 거북선이 참전한 주요 해전은 사천 해전, 당포 해전, 당항포 해전, 한산도 해전, 부산포 해전이었다. 사천 해전은 거북선이 최초로 참전한 해전으로서, 적어도 2척의 거북선이 참전하였다. 이 해전에서 거북선은 조선 함대의 선봉선이 되어 함포 공격으로 일본 함대의 예봉을 꺾었다. 당포 해전과 당항포 해전에서 거북선은 일본 함대의 대장선을 집중하여 공격하였다. 그럼으로써 일본 함대의 지휘체계를 무너뜨리고 조선 함대의 승리에 크게 이바지하였다. 한산도해전에서 거북선은 학익진의 좌･우 익단에 배치되어 적 함대를 포위 공격하였다. 그 해전에 참전한 거북선의 척수는 3척이었다. 부산포 해전에서 거북선은 종열진의 선두에서 진격하여 일본 함대의 예봉을 꺾고 승리에 크게 이바지하였다. 거북선은 임진왜란 해전에서 함포 공격으로 일본 함대의 장기(長技)인 등선백병전을 무력화시켰다.

영문 초록

The Turtle Ship was a armored ship and created by Admiral Yi Sun-sin in 1592, it is as follows that the results of the Turtle Ship s function researched; First, the Turtle Ship carried out the function of an assault boat at the front of the Yi Sun-sin fleet. Second, the Turtle Ship carried out the function of the attack by the various naval gun. She mounted Cheonja-chongtong, Jija-chongtong, Hyunja-chongtong, Hwangja-chongtong as large sized guns at that time. These chongtong guns fired a big arrow made of a log or bullets. Third, the Turtle Ship carried out the function of a lumber carrier. Next to, the Turtle Ship participated in several naval battles, for example, Sacheon, Dangpo, Danghangpo, Hansando, Busanpo, during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. The battle of the Sacheon was the first war of the Turtle Ship, At least two Turtle Ships took part in that engagement. The Turtle Ships broke the brunt of the Japanese fleet in the battle. In the Dangpo and Danghangpo battles the Turtle Ships attacked the flagship of the Japanese fleet. Therefore the Turtle Ships succeed in breaking through the enemy’s chain of command and contributed largely toward victory of Joseon fleet. In the Hansando battle three Turtle Ships placed on the end of right and left of the eagle formation, so surrounded and attacked the enemy fleet. In the Busanpo battle the Turtle Ships advanced at the forefront of a column and broke the brunt of the Japanese fleet, so contributed largely toward victory of Joseon fleet. The Turtle Ships neutralized their specialty of the hand-to-hand fighting of Japanese naval ships by bombardment from naval gun.
