영문 초록

This paper argues that the wh-island effects and the additional wh-effects in Korean, Japanese, Chinese and English can be accommodated by an AGREE-based approach. Watanabe (1992), Aoun & Li (1993) and Tsai (1994) argued the need for movement of a null operator or a Q-operator in and out the wh-islands in order to account for the phenomena. This paper will provide an account for the phenomena, only employing the probe-goal mechanism, which thus makes unnecessary the movement of the null operator or the Q-operator. It is claimed that the additional wh-effects provide evidence for existence of a defective C in Korean and Japanese.
