국문 초록

이 글은 정약용의 ｢소경에게 시집간 여자｣(道康瞽家婦詞)에 나타난 폭력의 양상과 탈출하려 는 한 여인의 삶을 조명하는 시도이다. 그 과정에서 작품에 드러난 여주인공에 대한 구조적 폭력을 조명하고, 여성의 더 나은 삶에 대한 모색을 ‘배우자 선택권’에 대한 문제와 ‘효와 열의 그림자에 대한 인식’으로 나누어 고찰하였다. 여주인공에 대한 주변인의 폭력에는 굳건한 가부장제가 기반을 이루고 있으며, 이 여주인공의 삶은 가부장제를 튼튼히 떠받치고 있는 기본가치에 대한 근본적인 문제를 제기한다. 여성이 혼인을 통해 행복을 얻는 삶만이 유일한 선택지가 아니며, 개인의 행복과 효ㆍ열의 수호는 다른 방향으로 갈 수도 있다는 점이다. 여주인공은 인내를 부덕(婦德)으로 여기지 않고, 지적 능력과 결단력을 지녔으며, 주관이 뚜렷하고 자신의 가치관을 수호한다. 여인은 부모가 정해준 배우자에게 종속되는 삶을 사는 것이 죽음보다 못한 삶이라고 인식하고 있는 것이다. 그녀는 전근대 효와 열의 관념을 벗어나 자신의 의지대로 삶을 살아가고자 하는 결단력을 보여주고 있다. 인내가 미덕이라는 규범과 참고 살다 보면 좋은 일이 있으리라는 근거 없는 낙관론, 나쁜 일이 일어나면 이를 당사자의 팔자나 운명에 책임을 전가하는 논리는 여인에게 효력을 갖지 못한다. 이는 더 나은 삶을 위해서, 털끝만 한 가능성이라도 붙잡고 고통스러운 현실을 탈출하는 가능성을 상상하게 된 시기가 도래했음을 보여준다. 이 작품에 나타난 고민은 당대 여성의 삶에 대한 고민이자 시대를 넘어 보편적 시공간의 여성들의 고민으로까지 확장될 가능성을 품고 있다. 보다 자유롭고 인간적인 삶을 영위하고자 하는 욕구는 시공간을 초월하기 때문이다. 또한 여성의 삶에 대한 진지한 고민이 20세기의 서구 페미니즘의 수용과 이식으로 이루어진 것이 아니라, 고유한 독자적인 흐름을 지니고 있다는 점에서 보다 그 의의를 주목받을 필요가 있다고 여겨진다.

영문 초록

This article is a study analyzing Jeong Yak-yong s “The Woman Married to So-Kyung” from the perspective of women’s literature. In the process, the multiple perspectives on the female protagonist are classified, and the exploration is divided into the problem of “choice of spouse” and “recognition of the shadow of filial piety and passion” in the search of a better life for women. The strong Confucian patriarchy is the basis for the violence of the surrounding people against the female protagonist, and the life of this female protagonist raises the fundamental question of the basic values ​​that are firmly supporting the Confucian patriarchy. Happiness through marriage is not the only option for women, and individual happiness and its pursuit, as well as filial duty and virtue, can lead to another direction in life. The female protagonist does not regard patience as a virtue; instead, she is intelligent and determined with a clear set of values that she defends. The protagonist considers the life of subordination to a spouse chosen by her parents to be worse than death. She breaks away from the pre-modern notions of filial duty and virtue and shows her determination to live her own life. The norm that patience is a virtue, the baseless optimism that endurance will eventually lead to happiness, and the logic of blaming bad news on one’s fortune and fate no longer apply to the protagonist. The protagonist has reached the point of envisioning escape by holding onto even the slightest possibility for a better life. The worries that appear in this work are worries about the lives of women of the day and have the potential to extend beyond the time to the worries of women of all times and spaces. This is because the desire to lead a more free and human-like life transcends time and space. In addition, it is worthy of attention because such serious worries about women s lives did not happen within the acceptance and transplantation of Western feminism in the 20th century, but they have their own unique and independent flow.
