<조침문>에 나타난 서술 주체와 서술 대상 간의 상관성 연구

국문 초록

본고에서는 조선 후기 글쓰기 주체로서의 여성의 특질을 보다 상세히 이해하기 위해서 ‘바늘’이라는 사물에 주목하여 논의를 진행하였다. 지금까지의 연구들이 작가의 의도와 행위를 중심으로 남편과 바늘의 동일시라는 문제를 다루고, 의인화 또는 제문이라는 형식의 차용이라는 관점에서 이 작품에 접근했다면, 본고에서는 ‘바늘’과 ‘글쓰기 양식’을 좀 더 적극적인 매개자로 보고, 바늘과 여성 주체 그리고 글쓰기 양식과 여성 주체의 관계를 검토함으로써 이 작품이 갖는 특징과 고유성을 체계적으로 규명하고자 했다. 이를 위해 본론의 각 장을 이야기 세계와 이를 둘러싼 서술의 차원 그리고 현실 세계로 구분하고 각각의 층위에서, 바늘이 바느질 행위를 하는 ‘나’, 제문을 쓰는 서술자로서의 ‘나’, 미망인이자 <조침문>의 작자로서의 ‘나’와 맺고 있는 관계를 검토하였다. 2장에서는 바느질이 바늘 스스로 행하는 독자적 창작 행위처럼 묘사된다는 점에 착안하여, 바늘과 ‘나’의 관계와 <조침문>과 작자의 관계가 유사함을 밝힌 뒤 이를 ‘유희’라는 관점에서 해석했다. 3장에서는 부러진 바늘에 대한 애도는 곧 한 사람의 노동자로 전락한 작자 자신의 삶에 대체불가능한 고유성이 존재한다는 사실을 확인하고자 하는 갈망과 맞닿아 있음을 밝혔다. 4장에서는 제문을 쓰는 서술자가 양반 남성의 위치에서 대상의 죽음을 애도하고 있으며, 그렇게 함으로써 자신의 현실적 곤궁을 상징적으로 보상받고 있음을 드러냈다. 결론적으로 <조침문>은 삶의 고유성과 관련하여 서술자가 지닌 갈등 그리고 죽음과 관련한 당대의 위계 질서가 내포한 모순을, 사물 그리고 글쓰기 행위와의 다양한 관계 맺음을 통해 드러내고 극복하는 이야기라고 보았다.

영문 초록

This essay examines the characteristics of women as a writing subject in the late Chosun Dynasty. For this purpose, I focus on the object, needle . If discussions so far dealt with the issue of identification between the husband and the needle, centering on the author s intentions and actions and approached the work in terms of personification or borrowing of the form of ritual, this paper looks at ‘a needle’ and ‘genres’ as a more active medium and examines the relationship between a needle and female subjects in more detail. To this end, I divide each chapter of this paper into ‘text; story and narrative’ and ‘context’, and differentiate between “I” as a needle sewing, I as a narrator, and I as a widow, the author of Jochim-mun. Based on the fact that sewing is described as an independent creative act done by the needle itself, in Chapter 2, I argue that sewing can be seen as art and the needle is to I what the author is to the text, Jochim-mun. By adapting the normative style, Jochim-mun becomes not a practical text but a literary and artistic text. In Chapter 3, I argue that mourning for a broken needle is in line with the desire to confirm that irreplaceable uniqueness exists in the life of the author who became a worker. The needle which I mourn is both a needle and myself. The sadness of losing a needle is compassion for the fact that it can be replaced by another needle and it is very similar to the pity that I’m judged through use and can be replaced by other workers. In Chapter 4, I find that the narrator, who writes the epitaph, mourns the death of the object in the seat of a nobleman, and in doing so, the author is symbolically rewarded for her realistic plight. The author is guilty of living rather than dying. This feeling is what she feels because she is a woman. But while mourning the needle, she plays the male role symbolically and forgets the guilt and gains the subjectivity. These actions reveal women’s desire for men’s roles and status. The changes of the subject depend not on the inner awakening or will of the subject, but on the relationship the subject has with others or things. The needle changes writer’s personality through sewing and writing. When the needle becomes a subject or an actor of artistic actions, “I” become both a viewer and a creator. When “I” write the needle’s epitaph, “I” can mourn the needle’s death from a male position. In conclusion, Jochim-mun was seen as a story of revealing and overcoming the contradictions contained by the narrator s conflicts regarding the uniqueness of life and the hierarchical order of this period regarding death through various relationships with objects and writing.
