『임석재 전집 한국구전설화』의 젠더와 매체성

국문 초록

본고는 『임석재 전집 한국구전설화』(이하 전집)이 각각의 설화를 채록하고, 기술한 방식을 중심으로 설화의 젠더가 어떻게 구성되는지 살펴보았다. 특히 화자 정보 표기, <책 머리에>, 설화의 배열을 중점적으로 분석하여 전집이 설화를 비매개적이며 비물질적인 정신 현상으로 신화화하고 있으며, 이에 구술성이 아닌 기술성의 층위가 적극적으로 개입되어 있음을 밝혔다. 전집은 이처럼 구술 주체와 기술 주체, 매개와 비매개의 결과물이기에, 텍스트의 젠더 역시 화자의 생물학적 성별이 설화에 그대로 반영된 것이 아닌 설화의 기술적 층위와 구술적 층위의 상호작용으로 만들어지는 구성물로 읽을 수 있다. 따라서 전집에서 텍스트의 젠더를 기술 층위와 구술 층위로 나누어 보고, 이들이 어떻게 위계화되고, 충돌하는지, 그 접점에서 어떤 텍스트적 현상으로 구성되는지 살펴보았다. 전집의 매체성을 젠더 문제와 관련지어 살펴보는 까닭은 젠더의 언어적, 인식론적인 구성물로서의 성격이 전집에서 이야기를 분류, 배열, 해석하는 작가의 인식론적 행위와 밀접한 연관이 있기 때문이다. 마지막으로 전집 안팎에서 드물게 나타날 뿐만 아니라 전집의 구술 층위나 기술 층위의 젠더 모두를 위반하는 이야기를 분석해서 이러한 이론적 가설의 타당성을 살펴보았다. 화자와 작가의 인식론적 틀로서의 구술된 젠더와 기술하는 젠더가 이들이 충돌할 때, 이야기의 특이성이 발생한다. 이러한 사례 분석을 통해 설화의 독특함과 독창성, 그리고 그 원천으로서의 작가의 개념이 구비문학 연구에서 더 적극적으로 고려되어야 함을 알 수 있다. 전집 작가의 텍스트 연행은 개별 화자 젠더의 다양성과 복수성을 비가시화했다. 그럼에도 불구하고 작가는 이러한 다양성의 세계를 특정한 잣대에 따라서 배제하거나, 개작하거나, 획일적으로 끼워 맞추려 하지 않았다. 다양한 쓰기의 결이 그대로 남아있기에 독자는 구술된 세계가 기술하는 세계와 충돌하고 넘쳐 흐르는 지점에 접근할 수 있다. 따라서 전집의 불규칙적이고, 비균질적이고, 일목요연하지 않은 부분은 텍스트적 한계나 결함으로 다루어질 것이 아니라 의미를 생산하는 가능성의 장소로 다시 읽어야 한다.

영문 초록

This study examines how gender of oral literature are composed based on the methods described in Collection of Korean Oral Narratives written by Lim Seok-Jae(任晳宰全集 韓國口傳說話) . To this end, the method of listening, conveying, recording, organizing, classifying, listing, and compiling used in the Collection to convey the story was viewed as a kind of literacy dimension and textual enforcement added by the author. Among them, it shows that not only oral but also descriptive layers of writing and recording were actively involved in the oral narrative to mythize the oral narrative as an unmediated and non-material mental phenomenon by analyzing the paratext such as speaker information notation , bookhead and arrangement of tales. As long as oral literature is the result of communication, disconnection, mediation, and non-mediation between these disparate subjects, the gender of the narrative text should also be read as a component created by the interaction of the literacy and oral layers rather than as the speaker s sex is clearly reflected in the narrative. Therefore, I divided them into levels of literacy and orality to see how stratification, conflict, and what textual phenomena occur at the interface. In short, based on the model considering the media nature of the oral literature, the concept of gender of oral literature should be also expanded from speaker s gender to writer s gender to writer s gender. This study propose a premise for the futher discussion. When the speaker and the writer s epistemological framework and the described gender collide, the story s specificity occurs. The case analysis shows that the uniqueness and creativity of the narrative and the concept of writer as a source should be considered more properly in the study of literature. Through heterogeneous and complex writing, the writer of the Collection made the speaker an unvisible subject. Nevertheless, the writer did not attempt to exclude, adapt, or uniformize the world of diversity according to a particular standard. As the various literacy remains intact, the reader can access the point where the written world conflicts with the spoken world and overflows. Therefore, irregular, inhomogeneous, and non-obvious parts of the Collection should be re-read as places of possibility to produce meaning, rather than treated as textual limitations or flaws.
