정의지향적 관점에 비추어 본 민주시민교육 교과서 분석

국문 초록

본 연구는 종래의 민주시민교육이 지닌 한계를 비판적으로 성찰하기 위한 목적 아래, 민주시민교육에 대한 여러 접근을 범주화하여 분석하였다. 민주시민교육을 ‘인지적 접근’, ‘참여적 접근’, ‘정의지향적 접근’으로 범주화하여 각 접근의 개념, 기본 가정과 특징, 실천 양상 등을 제시하고, 이 연구가 지지하는 정의지향적 접근(justice-oriented approach)이 갖는 의미와 가치에 대해 논의하였다. 정의지향적 접근의 관점에서 경기도교육청이 개발⋅적용하고 있는 민주시민교육 교과서 『더불어 사는 민주시민』의 주요 특징을 살펴보았다. 연구 결과, 『더불어 사는 민주시민』은 민주주의의 복잡성에 대한 내용을 담고 있을 뿐 아니라, 민주주의와 관련된 사회 현상에 대해 비판적으로 사고할 수 있는 다양한 자료와 질문을 제시하고 있었다. 그러나 동시에 학생들이 사회현상의 근본적인 원인을 탐색하고 분석하는 데 도움이 될 수 있는 중요한 일부 개념들을 포함하지 않고 있었다. 시민권과 인권의 가변성과 확장성, 정체성의 상호교차성, 인정과 재현 차원의 사회정의, 구조적⋅문화적 폭력 등이 그 예이다. 연구결과를 토대로 학교 민주시민교육에 대한 시사점과 향후 과제를 도출하였다.

영문 초록

The study categorized and analyzed various approaches to democratic citizenship education to critically reflect on the current pedagogical practices. It identified the three categories: cognitive approach, participatory approach, and justice-oriented approach. The features, underlying assumptions, and practice examples of each category were explored. Grounded in the justice-oriented approach, the study analyzed the democratic citizenship education textbook, Democratic Citizenship Living Together, developed by Gyeonggido Office of Education in South Korea. As a result, the textbook dealt with various issues about democracy in complex ways; it used multiple different sources of information and posed critical questions. However, the textbook tended to exclude some important topics that would enable students to examine the existing social structures of inequity and injustice: expandability and flexibility of the concept of citizenship and human rights, the notion of intersectionality, social justice and the politics of representation and recognition, and structural and cultural violence. The implications for policy, practice, and theory were discussed.
