국문 초록

본 연구는 장학금 및 학자금 대출 수혜가 4년제 대학생의 학습성과(대학학점, 이수학점)와 학생참여(교과참여, 공동교과참여, 비교과참여)에 미치는 효과에 대해 규명하고자 하였다. 또한 장학금 및 학자금 대출의 출처와 성격, 대학 특성에 따른 효과를 분석함으로써 장학금 및 학자금 대출 수혜 효과를 보다 세분화하여 검증하고자 하였다. 연구를 위해 한국장학패널(Korea Student Aid Panel Survey: KOSAPS)의 1차에서 4차년도 자료를 활용하였으며 총 9개 학기의 데이터를 균형패널(balanced panel)로 재구성하여 4년제 대학의 총 3,854명의 설문자료를 분석에 활용하였다. 패널분석을 위해 이원고정효과모형(two-way fixed effects model)과 확률효과모형(random effects model) 분석 방법이 사용되었다. 분석결과 장학금 수혜는 전반적으로 교과참여, 이수학점, 학점에 대체적으로 유의한 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 대출 수혜 여부에 따른 학업성과 및 학생참여에 대한 유의한 차이는 없었지만, 한국장학재단의 대출 이용 시 이수학점이 증가하였다. 그러나 장학금 및 학자금 대출의 수혜여부와 유형, 대학 특성에 따른 효과가 상이하게 관찰되었으며 이를 바탕으로 학생의 소득, 학교유형 등을 반영한 학자금 지원 정책방안 등의 필요성에 대하여 논의하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of the study is to examine the effects of financial aid (scholarship and loans) on college student engagement (curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular) and achievement (earned credits and GPA) in 4-year colleges and universities in South Korea. Additionally, the study provides analysis on how the effects would vary according to the characteristics of financial aids and of colleges (location and control). The sample includes 3,854 students enrolled in 4-year institutions throughout 9 consecutive terms from a national data set from the Korea Student Aid Panel Survey (KOSAPS) by the Korea Student Aid Foundation. A two-way fixed effects model and a random effects model for panel analysis were applied. As a result of the analyses, it was found that scholarships generally had a significant effect on curricular engagement, earned credits, and GPA. Although there was no significant difference in student engagement and achievement depending on taking loans or not, the earned credits increased when taking a loan specifically from the Korea Scholarship Foundation. Furthermore, upon a detailed examination of the effects of financial aids by characteristics (e.g., need-based, merit-based, and work-study based) and institutional type and location, this study revealed that income-based scholarships showed a positive effect on students’ earned credits in contrast to its negative effect on GPA and student engagement in class and co-curricular activities. The income-contingent loan was found to have a positive impact on students’ earned credits, whereas the private student loans had a negative effect on the earned credits. Based on these findings, practical and policy suggestions were discussed.
