국문 초록

우리나라의 세계사 교육 과정에서 뮌헨 협정에 대한 내용이 차지하는 비중은 매우 작다. 그동안 교과서에서 뮌헨 협정을 소홀하게 다루면서 제2차 세계대전 발발의 책임은 독·소불가침 조약을 체결한 히틀러와 스탈린 몫이 되었으며, 영국과 프랑스는 면죄부를 받을 수 있었다. 또한 이는 역사 서술에 있어서 필요한 엄밀성 결여와 연결되었다. 주데텐란트는 어디인가? 뮌헨에서 히틀러가 요구한 것은 정확히 무엇인가? 역사용어 ‘주데텐란트 (Sudetenland)’는 명확하게 규정할 수 없는 역사적, 지리적 범위를 담고 있는 표현이다. 주데텐란드는 지리적, 행정적, 사회-문화적 정의에 따라 영역을 달리한다. 또한 20세기 전반기 동안 독일-오스트리아 공화국, 독일 제국 등에서 각기 다른 범위의 행정 구역을 형성하였다. 이러한 역사적 의미의 다양성과 함께 뮌헨 협정에서 히틀러가 요구한 것이 단순한 영토로서 ‘주데텐란트’가 아닌 권리로서 ‘주데텐 독일인들의 영역’이라는 점을 명확하게 인식하고 교과서를 서술할 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

The Munich Agreement is more or less neglected by the World-History curriculum in South Korea. This negligence puts the responsibility on Hitler and Stalin, final decision makers of the Treaty of Non-Aggression between Germany and the USSR, for the outbreak of the World War II and, as a result, UK and France are freed from their responsibility. Furthermore, it brings out the lack of strictness in the historical description. Where is Sudetenland? What does Hitler demand exactly in Munich? Sudetenland, as a historical term, never formed a single historical and geographical region. Different territories of the Sudetenland can be defined in different ways through geographical, administrative and socio-cultural views. For the first half of the 20th century, the administrative zone established under the name of Sudetenland was different in size in the Republic of German-Austria and German Empire. Considering this variety of meanings, it is necessary to understand what Hitler demanded in Munich as right of “the Sudeten German territory”, not as a simple territory, Sudetenland. The History textbook must be written in this perspective.
