국문 초록

이 연구는 고등학생들의 기회불평등의식 현황을 정리하고, 학교교육 및 가정배경 등 사회·심리적 요인이 기회불평등의식에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 분석하였다. 한국사회에서 고등학생들의 학교교육 평가는 아버지의 학력과 직업, 그리고 계층소속감에 따라서 많은 차이를 보이며, 고등학생의 거주지 교육생활 환경도 부모의 학력 및 직업 등 가정배경에 따라서 상기하게 평가된다. 대부분의 중학교 졸업자들이 고등학교를 진학하는 한국사회에서 교육기회는 형식적으로 평등한 것으로 보이지만, 실제로는 부모의 경제적 능력과 같은 사회경제적 요인에 따라서 학교와 거주지에서의 교육경험이 차별적으로 나타난다. 고등학생들의 기회불평등의식은 이러한 사회경제적 요인의 격차를 반영한다. 현재 고등학생들은 가족배경이 개인적 성공의 주요 요인이라고 평가하며, 교육·인맥형성·노동시장의 기회공평성에 대해서 부정적이다. 회귀분석결과에 의하면, 가정배경 가운데 주관적 계층지위와 아버지의 직업이 기회불평등의식에 영향을 미치며, 상류층 가정 혹은 화이트칼라 직업의 아버지를 둔 고등학생은 기회불평등이 덜 심각하다고 의식한다. 또한 고등학생들의 기회불평등의식은 학교교육과 지역의 교육생활 환경에 영향을 받는다. 부모의 직업 등 가정배경이 동일하다면, 학교의 다양한 교육적 역할과 지역의 교육생활 환경을 긍정적으로 평가할수록 고등학생들은 기회불평등이 덜 심각하다고 의식한다. 따라서 학교를 포함한 전 사회적 차원의 정책을 통하여 사회경제적 격차를 해소한다면, 이에 대한 학교 및 지역 등에 대한 평가도 긍정적으로 변화할 것이며, 이러한 변화가 궁극적으로 기회불평등의식에도 영향을 미칠 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper examines social consciousness of opportunity inequality among the high school students and empirically analyzes the effects of the social and psychological factors on social consciousness of opportunity inequality. The school experiences of the Korean high school students differ by the jobs of their parents and self-perception of social stratification status. We could also find the significant differences in their evaluation of local environment for education activities according to such family backgrounds as the education levels of their parents and the stratification status perceptions. Even though the opportunity for education seems to be formally equal in Korea where most junior high school graduates go on to the high school, the students different evaluate the educational experiences at the school and the local community according to the family backgrounds. The social consciousness of opportunity inequality among the high school students reflects the gaps of socio-psychological factors. Many students agree with the argument that family background is one of the main factors to decide their own success. They have a negative attitude about the opportunity equality for the education, social networks and the labor market achievements. Among the family backgrounds, father’s job and stratification status significantly affect the social consciousness of opportunity inequality. Their evaluations of the school experiences and the local environment for education activities also affect their attitude. If the family backgrounds are same, those with the positive school experiences and the favorable local environment tend to show a less inequality-oriented attitude. The findings therefore imply that the social and educational policies that could reduce the socioeconomic gaps could consequently affect the social consciousness of opportunity inequality in Korea.
