국문 초록

19세기 영국 작가 조지 엘리엇은 창작 활동 초기부터 ‘공감의 확대’를 문학의 소명으로 제시했다. 그리고 “다른 이들의 고통과 기쁨을 더 잘 상상하고 느끼게 되는 것”을 ‘공감의 확대’가 의미하는 바로 설명했다. 그러나 흥미롭게도 엘리엇은 문학을 통한 공감 증진을 추구하는 한편 그런 추구가 직면하는 인식론적이고 윤리적인 난제, 즉 고통과 기쁨에 대한 자아와 타자의 인식과 이해(利害)가 일치할 수 없다는 난제를 줄곧 의식하고 탐구한 작가이기도 하다. 본 논문은 그 난제를 가장 집중적으로 탐구한 엘리엇의 후기 소설 『미들마치』를 분석한다. 아울러 엘리엇이 개인화되고 심리화된 공감(共感) 개념에 수반된 인식론적, 윤리적 딜레마를 공동체의 합의된 공적 감정, 즉 공감(公感) 개념을 통해 해소하고, 이 과정에서 공감 개념의 사회성을 환기하는 과정을 살펴본다.

영문 초록

Throughout her literary career, George Eliot believed that ‘extension of sympathy’ should be the moral goal of the art and strove to find ways to enlarge sympathy. While some of her fictions present sympathy as an individual moral ability to identify with and feel for the pain of others, Middlemarch pays more attention to the problems embedded in such psychological and individualistic understanding of sympathy. Tracing the failed moral idealism of Dorothea to extend her sympathy to the point of martyrdom, Middlemarch illustrates the logical end that extension of sympathy as an individual moral sensitivity ultimately faces: a paranoia to listen and respond to all the cries of the world and exhaustion from the futile attempt. As an alternative, this paper argues, Middlemarch re-imagines sympathy as a shared public feeling and suggests that ‘extension of sympathy’ may mean enlarging the network and boundary of communal moral values and sentiments.
