국문 초록

조선오만분일지형도는 조선총독부가 주관하여 조선토지조사국에서 1914년부터 1918년까지 측량하여 제작한 지도이다. 이 중 제주도 지도는 도엽 11개로, 1917년~1918년 측도하고 1918년~1919년에 발행하였다. 이 제주도 지도 속에서 제주불교 관련하여 사찰 3개소(관음사, 소림사, 법정사)와 고탑 1개소(불탑사오층석탑)가 확인되었다. 지도라는 자료의 특성에 따라 사찰의 지리적 위치와 지형적 특성, 인근 지역의 상황을 파악할 수 있다. 조선오만분일지형도의 경도 위도 지리정보를 바탕으로 했을 때, 1918년의 관음사 위치는 현재 관음사 경내임이 확인되고, 1949년 제주4.3사건으로 소각된 이후 현재 복원되지 않고 있는 소림사의 위치를 확인할 수 있다. 법정사의 1918년 위치는 현재의 의열사에서 200여 미터 남쪽 지경으로 파악된다. 무오법정사항일운동발상지를 문화재구역으로 지정할 때는 확인하지 못했던 새로운 자료로, 조선오만분일지형도는 1918년의 법정사의 지리정보를 경도 위도 수치로 파악할 수 있다. 그러나 본고에서 제시한 좌표수치는 면적을 고려하여 이해해야 할 필요가 있어, 정확한 하나의 지점을 나타내주는 수치로 단언하기는 어렵다. 실제 위치는 좌표를 중심으로 한 인근 면적으로 이해해야 할 것으로 생각된다. 또한 지도를 통해 관음사, 소림사, 법정사로 이르는 도로 정보와 주변의 황지(荒地), 활엽수림 등의 상황 및 주거 시설 상황도 파악되어 1918년의 제주도 사찰의 특징을 파악할 수 있기도 하다. 무엇보다 본 연구로 법정사의 1918년 좌표가 제공되었고 제주법정사항일운동 이전의 법정사 상황을 밝힐 수 있게 되었다. 조선오만분일지형도에서 항일운동 이전에 제 주 불교사찰로 파악하고 있었다는 점은 기존 법정사 항일운동 연구의 법정사와 법정사 거주 인물의 정체성 의견에 대한 증빙자료가 될 것으로 생각한다.

영문 초록

The 1:50,000 Topographic maps of Joseon was produced by the Bureau of Land Survey under the supervision of the Governor-General of Joseon. It is on the basis of measurement from 1914 to 1918. It includes the 11 sheets of Jeju, which were measured from 1917 to 1918 and published from 1918 to 1919. In this survey on these maps of Jeju, we find out the Buddhist sites in Jeju; 3 Buddhist temples (Gwaneumsa, Sorimsa, and Beopjeongsa) and a pagoda (The five storied pagoda of Bultapsa). In addition, we can confirm the geographic locations and topographic conditions of these Buddhist sites and their surrounding areas. On the basis of the geographic information including coordinates from the 1:50,000 Topographic maps of Joseon, the location of Gwaneumsa in 1918 is in the current grounds of the same temple. The research can also confirm the location of Sorimsa from the maps. Sorimsa has not been restored yet after the incineration in the Jeju 4.3 incidents. Furthermore, we confirm the location of Beopjeongsa in 1918 on the maps that is located approximately 200 meters south from the current Uiyeolsa. The 1:50,000 Topographic maps of Joseon are newly found, which were not known at the time of the designation of the Birthplace of Beopjeongsa Anti-Japanese Movement. However, we should consider the area of temple sites when specifying their exact locations with these figures of geographic information. Therefore, the exact locations of the temple sites must have been somewhere around their geographic coordinates. Additionally, we can confirm the access information to Gwaneumsa, Sorimsa, and Beopjeongsa and their surrounding area including the broad-leaved forests, wastelands, and residences. Above all, the geographic coordinates of Beopjeongsa in 1918 are found by this research. Beopjeongsa is depicted as Buddhist temple on The 1:50,000 Topographic maps of Korea. It also describes the surroundings of Beopjeongsa before Beopjeongsa anti-Japanese movement. Therefore, my finding will be evidence for the previous researches of Beopjeongsa anti-Japanese movement and the testimonies of personal identities of residents at Beopjeongsa.
