국문 초록

본 논문의 목적은 존 로스(John Ross)의 선교사역에 대한 역사적 고찰이다. 이러한 시도를 통해 로스의 성경번역을 사회복지적으로 살펴보는데 있다. 존 로스는 한문성경을 한글로 번역하여 한국 교회의 부흥과 개화기 한국 사회의 발전을 가져오는데 교량적 역할을 하였다. 로스의 성경번역으로 한국 내 기독교가 빠르게 정착될 수 있었기 때문이다. 이러한 맥락에서 볼 때 로스는 한국 기독교의 역사 안에서 차지하는 비중이 크다. 특히 우리나라는 로스의 성경번역으로 문맹퇴치를 앞당겼다. 선교사들이 해외에 나가 성경을 번역하고 배포하며 학교설립과 교회당 건축, 의료서비스를 제공하는 것 등을 같은 맥락으로 볼 수 있다. 따라서 본 논문은 이러한 맥락에 따라 로스의 성경번역을 사회복지적으로 재조명하였다. 사회복지는 인간의 삶의 질 향상을 위한 사회적 노력이다. 이러한 의미에서 로스의 성경번역 작업은 한국의 사회복지적 사회발전에 영향을 미친 원동력이 될 수 있다. 즉 한글성경의 배포는 한글의 대중화란 의미에서 기독교 문화의 확산과 사회복지적 문물보급 등의 형태로 나타났다. 그러므로 본 연구자는 로스의 성경번역을 기독교 사회복지의 역사에서 제외해서는 안 될 중요한 요인으로 보았다.

영문 초록

The purpose of the Thesis is a historical study of the missionary work of John Ross. Through these attempts, Ross’s translation of the Bible is socially examined. John Ross translated the Chinese scriptures into Korean and played a role in bringing about the revival of the Korean church and the development of Korean society during the period of enlightenment. This is because the translation of Ross Bible enabled Christianity in Korea to quickly settle down. In this context, Ross is indeed a large part of Korean Christian history. Our country advanced the eradication of illiteracy to the Bible translation of Ross. The same meaning is for missionaries to go abroad to translate and distribute the Bible, establish schools, build churches and provide medical services. Thus, This paper recounted Ross s translation of the Bible in a social way. Social welfare is a social effort to improve the quality of human life. In this sense, Ross’s work on translating the Bible could be the driving force behind Korea’s social and social development. In other words, the distribution of the Korean Bible appeared in the form of the spread of Christian culture and the distribution of social welfare in the sense of popularization of Hangeul. Therefore, this researcher saw Ross s translation of the Bible as an important factor that should not be excluded from the history of Christian social welfare.
