영문 초록

The Korean Provisional Government(KPG), which was established in Shanghai, China, in April 1919, held two big new-year celebration ceremonies in 1920 and 1921. Notably, the 1920 celebration ceremony was the first new-year celebration for the KPG, making it profound. The KPG promoted Koreans’ patriotism and pledged its independence fighting through the rite of the new year celebration. The two celebration ceremonies were all held at a restaurant within the hotel and the department store of International Settlement. These facilities were modern buildings that were constructed with China’s commercial development in the 1910s. Ever prospering consumption culture in Shanghai seems to have greatly influenced Koreans there. The first celebration ceremoney was held at Yipinxiang Hotel of International Settlement at 11 a.m. on January 1, 1920. KPG prepared a gigantic national flag to be raised in front of the event hall of Yipinxiang. To the accompaniment of Yipinxiang’s western-style band, Korean national anthem was sung, deeply touching the hearts of all participants. Finishing the ceremony at 4 p.m. on the same day, figures of the KPG took memorial historical photos on the rooftop of Yipinxiang. The next year, 1921, KPG also held the new year celebration ceremony. At 12 noon, on January 1, 1921, the second new-year-celebration ceremony was held by the KPG at Dadong Hotel Restrauant of Nanjing Road Yongan Department Store. After finishing the ceremony, participants took memorial historical photos on the rooftop of Yeongan Department Store. Such memorial photos, which symbolized the KPG, have been left to present day. But no more data or photos are found except these two new-year celebration ceremonies held by the KPG. This is probably because, in 1921 when the KPG failed to properly play its role, leading the meeting of representatives of the people to be convened, the people’s independence movement camps were separated, and the organization increasingly suffered financial difficulties. The KPG’s new-year celebration ceremonies well show the consumption culture of then Shanghai-residing Koreans including the figures of the KPG, and the celebration ceremonies also well show the situations of Korean independence camps in Shanghai, and the financial situations of the KPG and Koreans residing in Shanghai.
