독립신문 만평의 상해 한인 독립운동과 생활문화에 대한 풍자

국문 초록

1919년 8월 21일 중국 上海에서 창간된 ≪獨立新聞≫은 1926년 폐간될 때까지 활발한 항일필봉투쟁을 벌였다. 그런만큼 독립신문의 지면은 대한민국 임시정부의 법령을 비롯한 고담준론들이 즐비하였는데, 그 사이로 『군소리』라는 제목의 짤막한 만평이 어렵사리 눈에 들어온다. 1919년 9월 20일부터 11월 15일까지 17회에 걸쳐 연재된 『군소리』의 필자는 ‘尖口子’라는 필명의 인물이다. 풀이하자면 ‘뾰족한 입’이다. 그는 『군소리』에서 상해 독립운동의 내밀한 모습과 국제도시 상해를 살아가는 일부 한인들의 부조리한 군상들을 거침없이 풍자하고 비평하였다. 첨구자는 임시정부와 임시의정원의 비효율적 모습에 대해서는 풍자와 비평을 마다하지 않았다. 반면에 열심히 일하는 임시정부 직원들에 대해서는 격려를 아끼지 않았다. 또한 현지 사회의 약자인 중국인 인력거꾼을 학대하거나 상해의 도시 소비문화에 빠져 사치를 일삼는 일부 몰지각한 한인들에 대해서는 엄중하게 경고하였다. 첨구자의 눈에 비친 상해 독립운동과 한인들의 생활 모습은 그동안의 독립운동사연구에서는 볼 수 없었던 생생한 것들임에 틀림없다.

영문 초록

Korea’s Dongnipsinmun (The Independence Newspaper), which was launched in Shanghai, China on August 21, 1919, wrote articles to resist the Japanese colonial rule of Korea until it was closed in 1926. As such, the newspaper was filled with high-profile discussions and criticisms including the laws concerning the Korean Provisional Government. Among them, Gunsori (Gossip), a short column, receives our attention. The column was run 17 times from September 20 to November 15, 1919, and it was written by a person with his pen name as Cheomguja, which means a pointed mouth. In the column, the writer boldly satirized and criticized the secret aspects of Koreans’ Independence Movement in Shanghai, as well as the absurdity of some Koreans living in that international city. Cheomguja never stopped criticizing and satirizing how the Provisional Government and the Provisional Assembly ran inefficiently. Meanwhile, he never stopped encouraging the hard-working employees of the Provisional government. Further, he gave stern warnings to some ugly Koreans who mistreated then social Chinese weak, rickshaw carriers or who indulged in the urban consumption culture and extravagant life of Shanghai. The Shanghai Independence Movement and Koreans’ lives in the eye of Cheomguja must be fresh to the erstwhile study on the history of independence movement.
