국문 초록

본 논문은 6·25전쟁기 서해 전역에서 수행된 공산군의 도서탈환 작전과 이에 대한 유엔군 방어작전의 전개과정에 대한 연구이다. 1951년 11월, 유엔 측의 특수작전활동을 억제하고, 휴전회담에서의 주도권 확보를 위한 공산군의 서해 전역 내 도서에 대한 대규모 해상공세가 시작되었다. 이에 따라 당시 해상봉쇄 작전을 담당하던 서해 유엔해군은 그들의 최우선적인 임무를 도서방어로 전환하고 1952년 말까지 해상 방어작전을 지속해야 했다. 서해 전역을 중심으로 전개된 공산 측의 해상공세와 이에 대한 유엔 측의 방어작전은 6·25전쟁기에 수행된 유일무이한 해상공방전이었다는 점에서 그 상징성이 크다. 또한 후반기 서해 전역에서 수행된 유엔군 작전 중 가장 중차대한, 따라서 반드시 재조명되어야 할 임무이기도 하다. 하지만 해당 주제에 대한 그간의 연구는 그 중요성에도 불구하고 지금껏 지지부진한 상황이었다. 특히 공산 측 도서탈환 작전의 준비와 시행, 그리고 이에 대한 유엔 측의 인식과 대응을 포괄하는 서해해상공방전의 전개과정에 대한 종합적 차원의 역사학적 연구가 부재해 왔던 것이다. 본 논문의 목적은 그간 심도 있게 다뤄지지 않았던 6·25전쟁기 서해 해상공방전의 전개과정을 좀 더 구체적으로 기술하는 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저 공산 측의 도서탈환 작전준비과정을 유엔 측의 서해도서 활용 및 휴전회담의 논의와 연계하여 살펴보았다. 이어 공산 측의 본격적인 도서탈환 작전의 전개와 이에 대한 유엔 측의 대응과정에 대해 검토하였다.

영문 초록

This thesis is about the process of the Communists’ offensive operation to recapture the islands and the UN Forces’ counter-action conducted on the west coast during the latter part of the Korean War. From early November 1951, UN Forces on the West Coast faced drastic changes in the operational environment with the start of the Communists’ offensive operation against the UN-held islands. This was not only to counter the UN’s clandestine activities but also to take the initiative in the truce talk negotiations. This situation forced the UN Naval Forces to shift their main mission from the Naval blockade to the islands’ defence, and this naval defensive operation had to be continued until late 1952. The study of this Island Warfare is very important in that this was the only the Communist forces’ offensive operation against the UN forces on the sea during the Korean War. This is also important in understanding the real value of the UN forces’ operation in the west as this was their most critical mission imposed on them during the latter part of the war. However, the historiography has been poorly documented the process of this offensive-defensive operation regardless of its actual value. The purpose of this study is to present a more detailed picture of this Island Warfare, which has been largely neglected. For this purpose, this thesis will seek to explore the course taken from the beginning of island warfare. A brief narrative is given of the UN Forces’ island use on the west coast before the start of the Communists’ offensive against the islands. And then, the study describes why they conducted the offensive operation; mainly focusing on the UN forces’ use of the islands and the dispute in the truce negotiations. It then discusses the process of island warfare and the UN Forces’ measures to defend the enemy’s offensive.
