국문 초록

모든 분야에서 외부의 영향이 막강해진 근대 전환기의 문학 양식인신소설의 경우 문학 안팎으로부터 어떤 영향을 받아 어떤 방식으로 그에 대응했는가 하는 것이 각 작품의 본질적인 요소가 된다. 이해조의 <구마검(驅 魔劒)>(1908)은 문학 안에서는 중국소설 <소미추(掃迷帚)>(1905)로부터, 문학 밖에서는 당시 서양의학의 발전상으로부터 영향을 받았다. <소미추>의24회 가운데 <구마검>이 특히 영향을 받은 것은 귀신을 쫓아 역병을 치료하려는 행위와 풍수를 믿고 따르는 행위를 각각 비판하고 있는 20회와 8회일 것이다. 선행연구에서 밝힌 대로 <구마검>은 <소미추> 도입부의 논설을작중 인물의 편지 내용으로 활용했는데, 문장 차원에서 보면 여기에 직역·생략·축약이 복합됐으며, <구마검>의 <소미추> 활용은 표절보다는 오마주에가까운 것이다. <구마검>이 반영하고 있는 서양의학의 발전에 작품 출현 당시에 가장 큰 역할을 한 건 물론 일본이지만, 그 전의 역사를 보면 중국을통한 서양의학의 꾸준한 수용이 그 바탕이 되었다. <구마검>은 우리가 관습적으로 생각하는 것보다 신소설의 형성에 중국이 문학 안팎에서 끼친 영향이 컸다는 사실을 일깨운다. 임화는 <신문학사>(1939-1940)에서 <구마검> 에 사실성(寫實性)과 시정성(市井性)이 뛰어나다고 평가했는데, 그것은 이 작품이 외부의 영향 요소를 활용한 태도와 직결된 문제이다. <구마검>은 서양의학이 대표하는 신세계를 작품의 지향점으로 삼으면서도 그에 대한 예찬은다만 <소미추>에서 가져온 논설과 서양의학에 관한 작자 자신의 논평으로짧게 갈음하고, 작품의 절대적인 분량은 ‘미신’이 대표하는 구세계를 구체적인 서사와 묘사를 통해 비판하는 데에 할애했다. 작자는 아직 추상적 관념의대상인 신세계는 최소로 언급하고, 그 대신 실질과 경험의 대상인 구세계를매우 자상히 그려내는 전략을 취했던 것이다. 임화는 <구마검>의 이런 특성에 의의를 부여하면서도 이를 정치성 및 사회성의 결여로써 폄하했는데, 이는 평자 자신이 신소설 시대의 계몽성에 여전히 제약되어 있었기 때문이다. <구마검>의 현실성을 시대를 초월하는 소설의 보편적 가치를 구현한 것으로 이해하는 것이 이 시점에 걸맞은 평가일 것이다.

영문 초록

In the case of Sin-so-seol(新小說), the intrinsic element of each work is how they were influenced both inside and outside the literature and how they responded to them. Lee Hae-jo(李海朝)’s was influenced by the Chinese novel and the development of Western medicine at the time. Of the 24 episodes of <掃迷帚>, <驅魔劒> was seem to be particularly affected by episodes 20 and 8, criticizing the act of pursuing ghosts to heal the plague and the act of believing and following feng shui, respectively. As revealed in previous studies, <驅魔劒> used the editorial at the beginning of <掃迷帚> as the content of the characters’ letters. From the sentence level, the literal translation, omit, and abbreviation were combined at that. And the use of <掃迷帚> in <驅魔劒> is closer to homage than plagiarism. Japan, of course, played a major role in the development of Western medicine in Korea at the time of the advent of <驅魔劒>, but the steady acceptance of Western medicine through China was the basis for this. <驅魔劒> reminds us that China has had a greater influence in and outside literature on the formation of 新小說 than we conventionally think. In (新文學史, 1939-1940), Im Hwa(林和) evaluated <驅魔劒> is excellent in reality, that is directly related to the attitude of the work using external influences. Although <驅魔劒> takes the new world represented by Western medicine as the aim of his work, the praise for it has been briefly replaced by the editorials taken from <掃迷帚> and the author’s own comments on Western medicine. Instead, the absolute volume of the work was devoted to criticizing the old world represented by superstition through concrete narratives and descriptions. The author’s strategy was to mention the new world, which is still the object of abstract ideas, to a minimum, and instead draw the old world, which is the object of substance and experience, in very detail. 林和, while giving significance to this characteristic of <驅魔劒>, dismissed it as a lack of politics and sociality, because the reviewer himself was still constrained in the illuminism of the 新小說 era. Understanding the reality of <驅魔劒> as an embodiment of the universal value as a novel that transcend the times would be an assessment appropriate for this
