식민지시기 한의학의 양약 수용과 대응

국문 초록

식민지배가 시작되면서 의료계는 서양의학 위주로 재편되었다. 한의학은 도태되지 않기 위해 변화해야 했다. 양약을 한약과 함께 구비하는 것은 가장 편리한 변화 모색이었다. 양약은 한약의 활용방법을 변화시켰다. 1930년대에 이르면 한약국방을 제정하자는 제안이 나왔다. 문제는 한약국방의 제정으로 나아가기 위해서 양약과 병존이나 활용방식의 수용을 넘어서는 변화가 필요하다는데 있었다. 한약에 대한 화학적 이해였다. 나아가 한약국방은 응용을 위한 토대였다. 신약 개발은 구체적인 예였다. 한약국방의 제정은 양약 수용을 통한 한약 변화의 궁극적 귀결 중 하나였다. 한의학의 전통을 강화하자는 주장 역시 일관되게 지속되고 있었다. 한약이 장점을 가지고 있고 한국인, 나아가 동양인의 체질에 적합하다는 주장이 제기되었다. 한약이 분석의 대상이 되기 힘들 정도로 난해하거나, 극단적으로는 불가해하다는 주장도 나왔다. 가장 적극적인 주장은 한약과 한의학의 독자성을 강조하며 한약 고유의 원리를 확인하고 활용하자는 것이었다. 음양론, 나아가 음양오행론은 한약의 독자성과 우월성을 가능하게 한 토대였다. 한약이 고유 원리와 활용방법을 가지고 있다면, 양약의 수용도 제한적으로 이루어질 필요가 있었다. 제한적 수용의 대상은 제도였다.

영문 초록

During the colonial era, the Japanese colonial government deployed medical policy biased toward Western medicine. Western medicine served as a medium of change or showed directions for change of herbal medicine. By the 1930s, suggestions were made to establish hanyakgukbang(漢藥局方) to set criteria for use of herbal medicine. There was a need to understand chemical aspects of herbal medicine to establish hanyakgukbang. Specifically, ingredients of herbal medicine needed to be analyzed. Going through analysis, herbal medicine was expounded into various ingredients including water(水分), ash(灰分), and extracts. A scientific, that is, chemical analysis of herbal medicine could lead to a discovery of effects of herbal medicine comparable to western medicine. However, not all doctors of Korean traditional medicine advocated these changes and their directions. In 1930s Korean traditional medicine boosted confidence of herbal medicine, which in turns, led to criticism over western medical science, as well as western medicine. Criticism over western medicine was directed in a way that criticized ignorance of principle of herbal medicine. The conclusion of criticism was to demand understanding of Korean traditional medicine. The theory of yin, yang, and five elements of the universe, were deemed at the center of Korean traditional medicine. It was a demand that knowledge of Korean traditional medicine should underlie use of herbal medicine. If herbal medicine indeed had unique principles and uses, adoption of western medicine needed to be done limitedly.
