일제강점기 신경쇠약 담론의 형성과 신경쇠약 매약의 확산

국문 초록

일제강점기의 상황에서 식민지 조선의 정신적 피로와 스트레스는 ‘신경쇠약’이라는 새로운 담론을 만들어냈다. 기존 조선 사회에서는 존재하지 않았던 질병명인 ‘신경쇠약’은 미국에서 시작되어 일본을 거쳐 조선에 들어오게 되었다. 본고에서는 기존의 사회에서는 존재하지 않던 새로운 질병이 어떠한 방식으로 외부에서 들어오고, 확산해 가는지에 대한 과정을 그려보고자 하였다. 일제강점기 조선 사회는 식민지 치하라는 시대적인 특수한 상황에서 ‘매약’의 열풍과 함께 매약 광고 시장이 매우 커지고 있는 상태였으며, ‘신경쇠약’과 ‘매약’ 역시 상호영향력을 주고받으면서 서로 거대한 담론을 형성해 나갔다. 신경쇠약은 매약과 매약 광고를 통해 사람들에게 널리 알려지게 된 부분이 있으며, 한편으로는 신경쇠약의 유행이 신경쇠약 매약의 공급과 광고 시장을 크게 만들었다고 할 수 있다. 한약으로 만든 신경쇠약 매약 광고를 통해서 한의학에서는 신경쇠약을 어떠한 방식으로 이해하고 받아들였는지, 어떻게 치료하고자 하였는지 알아보고자 한다.

영문 초록

The psychological and emotional stress and fatigue that Joseon experienced as a colony during the Period of Japanese Occupation gave rise to the new discourse of Neurasthenia. A disease name that had never existed in Joseon, Neurasthenia originated in America and arrived through Japan to Joseon. This paper aims to describe how a disease that did not exist in Korean society previously entered the country and spread there. In Joseon during the Period of Japanese Occupation, the advertisement market for medicines for sale was getting big amidst the frenzy of medicines for sale under the extraordinary circumstances of the colonial rule. Neurasthenia and medicines for sale in turn built grand narratives through the exchange of their influences. Neurasthenia came to be known to the general public partly through the Medicines for sale and the advertisement of the Medicines for sale. On the other hand, the prevalence of Neurasthenia increased the supply of Medicines for sale and the advertisement market for them. This study will examine the advertisements for Neurasthenia medicines for sale that were made of Korean medicines to see how the Korean medicine understood and received Neurasthenia and how it tried to treat it.
