예술 경험은 민주적 시민성에 어떻게 관계하는가?

국문 초록

본 연구는 예술 경험과 민주적 시민성 사이의 관계를 미술교육적 측면에서 해명한다. 인성과 시민성의 동시적 고양을 추구하는 민주시민교육의 이론적 배경을 검토하고, 민주주의를 위한 ‘시민성’의 발현에 예술 경험이 유의미하게 관계할 수 있는지 탐색한다. 본 연구에서 예술은 미술에 초점을 두며 탐색의 이론적 틀은 누스바움의 철학을 바탕으로 하였다. 이익을 위한 교육 모델의 위험을 경고한 누스바움은 민주주의를 위한 인간성 계발 교육 모델을 제시하면서 시민교육에서 예술의 중요성을 강조한다. 본 연구자는 누스바움의 관점에 기초하여 예술 경험과 민주적 시민성 형성 사이의 관계성을 1) 미학적 주체성을 통한 상호문화적 주권 형성 2) 감정이 개입하는 질적 사고와 윤리적 판단 3) 예술적 상상력에서 사회적 상상력으로의 전이 4) 차이의 다원성과 공공성의 관계 맺음 측면에서 분석하였다. 이를 통해 예술 경험은 개인의 주관적 경험을 넘어 공동체적 가치를 내포함을 밝힌다. 민주시민의 사유는 개인의 감각적 차원에서부터 공동체로 나아가며 예술은 미학적 주권자인 학생이 자유와 공공성의 지각적 균형을 유지하는 데 주요하게 관계한다. 예술은 인간다움에 대한 사유를 자극하며 시민의 세계를 만나게 하고, 시민의 세계는 예술을 통해 시민성의 진보를 거듭할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The study elucidates the relationship between experiences on arts and democratic citizenship. It is to review the theoretical background of the democratic citizen education pursuing simultaneous enhancement of personality and citizenship, and to explore that experiences on arts can be meaningfully related to revelation of ‘citizenship’ for democracy. The theoretical base for exploration is based on Nussbaum’s philosophy. Nussbaum warns the risk of educational models for profits and emphasizes the importance of arts and liberal arts for citizen education by presenting an education model to develop humanity for democracy. The study analyzes the effects of experiences on arts on the formation of democratic citizenship based on Nussbaum’s ideas in the aspects of 1) formation of intercultural sovereignty between the aesthetic principal agent and others 2) qualitative knowledge and ethical judgment that emotions intervene, 3) transition from artistic imagination to social imagination and 4) having a relationship between multiplicity of differences and publicness. Through this, it is to cast light upon experiences on arts having values beyond subjective experiences in the individual level. Experiences on arts are mainly related to maintaining freedom of students who are aesthetic sovereigns and perceptual balance of publicity. Democratic citizens’ thoughts and changes are originated from individual’s sensible level and move towards a community. Experiences on arts stimulate thoughts on humanity and make it possible to meet the world of citizens, and the world of citizens makes progress over and over again through arts.
