국문 초록

이 논문은 고고학적 연구를 수행함에 있어서 표본조사 방법의 중요성에 대해서 고찰한 것이다. 표본조사 방법론은 한국의 제 학문 분야에서 이미 오래 전부터 논의되어 왔고 실제 연구에 적용되어 사용되고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 우리들의 일상생활에도 많이 적용되고 있는 것이어서 생소한 것만은 아니다.고고학 분야에서도 적지 않게 소개되었고 근래에는 시ㆍ발굴 현장에서 통상적으로 사용되고 있는 것이 현실이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 한국 고고학계에서 표본조사 방법을 심층적으로 다루거나 논의한 논저가 그다지 많은 편은 아니다. 우리나라 고고학에서도 통계학에 대한 관심이 높아져 가고 있고 사용하는 예도 나날이 증가하고 있다. 이런 상황을 고려하면 통계학의 기본이라고 할 수 있는 표본조사 방법에 관한 내용도 당연히 고려의 대상이 되어야 하고 적극적인 논의와 사용이 요구된다고 하겠다. 통계학과 표본조사 방법을 고고학에 적용하는 그 자체가 고고학의 학문적 수준을 자동적으로 상승시켜 주는 것은 아니다. 그러나 한정된 고고학 자원을 효율적으로 이용하고 수집된 자료를 표본조사 방법에 입각하여 분석하고 해석하면 새로운 연구성과가 도출될 수도 있고 고고학의 발전에 기여할 수 있는 부분이 많다.이런 점을 염두에 두면서 본고에서는 표본조사 방법과 관련된 기본적인 개념과 그 사용의 당위성에 관해서 고고학적 실례와 연계하여 서술하였다.

영문 초록

The major purpose of this paper is focusing on the significance of adopting sampling methods in Korean archaeological research. Sampling methods have been discussed and adopted in many different fields of academic subject over the years in Korea. Since we come across the concept of sampling almost everyday in one way or another, we are not totally unfamiliar with it any longer. Furthermore, sampling has been introduced to Korean archaeology quite while ago and most Korean archaeologists are routinely practicing the method when they are at preliminary excavation stages. Despite, not many serious archaeological research in association with sampling has been conducted so far. In this sense, it should be strongly encouraged to adopt the concept of the method in different stages of archaeological processes, since sampling is a starting point for statistical analyses. Adopting sampling and statistics by no means automatically upgrade the quality and objectiveness of archaeological research. However, if Korean archaeologists practice sampling more frequently, it is very advantages for us in many different aspects of archaeological research. For example, we are able to develop our research technique with limited archaeological resources, and to draw a different interpretation, and more convincing and reliable research outcomes. Eventually there is no doubt that this will play an important role for the development of Korean archaeology.
