익산 미륵사지 출토 치미에 대한 고찰

국문 초록

본고는 익산 미륵사지에서 출토된 치미에 대한 변화과정을 밝히고자 하는 것이다. 익산 미륵사지는 백제시기부터 조선시대까지 운영되었고, 이곳에서 출토된 치미는 백제시기부터 고려시대까지 제작되었다. 치미는 총 ⑧가지 유형으로 나누어지며 백제시기에 ①유형이 확인되고, 통일신라시기에 ②~⑦유형, 그리고 고려시대에 ⑧유형이 확인된다. ①유형은 백제시기 치미로 동원 승방지에서 고식기와와 함께 출토되었으며, 7세기 전중반 정도에 제작되었다고 여겨진다. ②유형은 ①유형과 대체로 비슷한 형태로 제작되었지만, 종대와 동부 등에서 변화가 확인되며, 대체로 통일신라 초기에 만들어졌다고 여겨진다. ③유형은 통일신라에서 전형적으로 출토되는 동부 무문 치미로, 정확한 시기는 파악하기 어렵지만, 통일신라 초기 사찰을 정비하는 과정에서 제작되었을 것으로 추정된다. ④~⑤유형은 파편으로만 확인되어 정확한 시기를 파악할 수 없으나, 이와 유사한 형태가 통일신라시기의 사찰에서 다수 출토되고 있기 때문에, 통일신라시기의 치미로 추정된다. ⑥유형과 ⑦유형은 각각 동원 승방지와 서원 승방지에서 주로 출토되었으며, 대체로 ⑥유형은 통일신라 중후반에, ⑦유형은 통일신라 후반 정도에 제작되었을 것으로 여겨진다. 마지막으로 ⑧유형은 연못지 후대 건물지와 고려시대 와요지 등에서 수습된 것으로 보아 고려시대에 제작된 것으로 파악된다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to shed light on the development of chimi, the ornamental tiles placed at each end of the top roof ridge of a temple building, excavated from the Mireuksa Temple Site (Iksan), which was active from the Baekje period to the Joseon period. The chimi excavated from Mireuksa Temple Site are believed to have been produced during the Baekje and Goryeo periods. Chimi are categorized into the following eight types: Type ① refers to tiles made during the Baekje period, Types ②~⑦ to tiles made during the Unified Silla period, and Type ⑧ to tiles made during the Goryeo period. Type ① tiles, known as Baekje chimi, were unearthed along with roof tiles from the site of the monks quarters in the East Wing of Mireuksa Temple. It is conjectured that they were made in the early to mid-seventh century. Type ② tiles exhibit a similar shape to Type ①, but show a slight change in their Jongdae (vertical lines) and Dongbu (bronze part). It is believed that the Type ② tiles were mainly produced in early Unified Silla period. Type ③ tiles, which date from the Unified Silla period, are typical chimi that feature a plain bronze part. It is assumed that these tiles were produced in the process of repairing old temples in the early days of the Unified Silla period. Types ④~⑤ consist largely of fragments, which makes it difficult to date them. However, given that similar looking fragments have been unearthed from temples of the Unified Silla period, it is assumed that they also date from that period. Types ⑥ and ⑦ were unearthed from the site of the monks quarters in the East Wing and West Wing, respectively. They are thought to have been produced sometime around the mid to late Unified Silla period. Lastly, Type ⑧ tiles were collected from the pond and the building sites and kiln site of the Goryeo period, and thus are assumed to have been produced during the Goryeo period.
