영문 초록

This article aims to demonstrate my experience of teaching children’s literature to undergraduate students in Intermediate English Reading class, attempting to share it with the teachers who are interested in using British and American children’s literature in English classes. It tries to illuminate how useful children’s literary texts are in English education, and suggests a way of effective teaching and curriculum building in undergraduate English classes. To solve the problem which texts should be chosen for undergraduate students, I suggest a checklist, considering various aspects of the English education. According to the checklist, I choose Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Lois Lowry’s The Giver for my Intermediate English Reading class. My article investigates various discussion issues of these works and teaching methods. Especially the article interrogates the teaching methods of role-playing, radio theater, audio book, reciting, and film, etc. I ultimately intend to enhance students’ critical thinking and creative imagination, improving their practical English by using children’s literature in my class. As a result, students’ achievement was higher than ever, and the course evaluation was good. Therefore, I conclude that using children’s literary texts is one of the good ways in teaching English as well as deepening students’ critical thinking.
