사회문화적 자본에 따른 대학생의 진로의식과 진로준비행동 양상 분석

국문 초록

본 연구는 대학생의 사회문화적 자본이 진로의식과 진로준비행동에 미치는 의미와 영향을 분석하기 위하여 수행되었다. 이를 위하여 전국의 대학생 24명을 대상으로 진로개발 과정에 관한 성찰일지를 수집하고 심층면담을 수행하였다. 그 결과를 소속대학의 특성이나 전공계열로 구분하고 사회적 자본의 차이가 진로를 설계하고 결정하는데 어떤 영향을 주는지 구체적으로 분석하였다. 그 결과 상위권 대학의 학생들은 직업분야의 전망을 우선적으로 고려하여 우선순위가 낮은 것들을 하나씩 소거하는 방식으로 진로를 설정하는 경향을 보였으나, 하위권 대학의 학생들은 상대적으로 불리한 조건을 극복하거나 이에 도전하려는 태도보다는 자신이 처한 현실적 조건에 따라 진로에 대한 눈높이를 조정하는 행태를 나타냈다. 아울러 수도권대학의 이공계열 학생들이 진취적으로 진로계획을 구체화하고 진로계획을 진취적으로 실천해나가는 모습과 달리 비수도권 인문계열 학생들은 ‘작은 꿈’에 만족하고자 하는 양상을 보여 양극단의 대비되는 모습을 보였다. 학생이 가진 사회문화적 자본이 진로의식과 진로준비행동에 영향을 미치는 현실을 고려할 때 진로설계와 진로개발 활동을 학생 개인에게 맡겨두기보다는 대학 차원에서 체계적인 지원 프로그램을 활성화하여 학생이 가진 사회문화적 조건의 한계를 극복할 수 있는 지지대의 역할을 제공할 필요가 있음을 확인하였다.

영문 초록

This study was conducted to analyze the meaning of college students social and cultural capital on career awareness and career preparation behavior. To this end, reflection journals(regarding each student s career preparation processes and activities) were collected from and in-depth interviews were conducted with 24 undergraduate students across the country. Results were categorized by the university attended and majors selected by each student, and an in-depth analysis was conducted to understand the impact of differences in social and cultural capital in planning and deciding the student s future career path. As a result, it was observed that students in top universities had a greater tendency to determine their future career paths by a process of elimination; setting out all possible options and eliminating each one by one based on practical factors and future prospects. Students from lower-ranking universities were reluctant to overcome or challenge barriers they faced due to their relatively disadvantageous positions for employment. Rather, they displayed a tendency to adjust their expectations from the outset based on their circumstances. In addition, while students from the science and engineering fields of the capital region tended to actively pursue a clearly set out career path, humanities students in other areas were inclined to be content pursuing their “small dream”. In light of the influence that the level of a student s social and cultural capital has on his or her extent of career awareness and preparation behavior, it would be inadvisable for students to be solely responsible for their own career planning and preparation activities. The need for unversities to develop and utilize university-wide systematic career planning support programs to support students in overcoming barriers they may face due to their level of social and cultural capital was confirmed by this study.
