대학 교양교육의 심화발전 방안에 대한 재고(再考)

국문 초록

본 논문은 현장 교육의 경험에 근거해서 대학 교양교육의 심화발전의 가능성을 모색하는 것에 그목적을 두고 있다. 교양교육의 일반적 관점에는 오래된 오해가 있어 왔다. 요컨대 대학에서 교양은절대적 필요 가치가 있는 것이 아니라 고등교육을 받은 사람이 덤으로 갖추었으면 하는 지적 장식품내지는 상식 차원에 놓는 경향이 그것이다. 그런데 21세기 글로벌 시대는 융합교육의 필요성이 더 높아진 때이다. 교육인적자원부는 이 필요성을충족시키기 위해 전공의 벽을 허물어 지식의 지평을 넓히려는 교육개혁을 국책 ACE사업을 통해 추진해왔다. 그 핵심 골자는 21세기 융합교육의 시대에 걸맞게 교양교육을 강화하는 것이다. 이에 발맞춰전국의 대학은 ACE 사업 유치를 위해 소위 ‘잘 가르치는 대학’을 표방하면서 교양교육과정을 개편해왔다. 문제는 ‘어떻게 잘 가르칠 것인가?’의 구체적 내용이다. 본고는 이 구체적 내용을 구체화한 사례를D대학의 교양교육의 발전 전략을 모델로 탐색하고자 한다. 이 탐색을 위해 본고 1장 서론에서는 “어떻게 잘 가르칠 것인가?”를 화두로 삼았다. 그 방법으로시류를 거슬러 대학 본연의 정신, 즉 진리 탐구의 충족을 위해 고전 ‘통권 읽기’의 중요성을 역설했다. 2장에서는 ‘잘 가르치기’ 위한 D대학의 교양교육의 단계적 전술 변화 과정을 추적한다. 그 과정은모든 대학의 교양교육의 ‘기초’에 해당하는 ‘대학글쓰기’에서 출발한다. 그런데 연구의 모델인 D대학의경우, 글쓰기란 그 주체의 두뇌 속에 소재가 풍부하지 않고서는 글쓰기의 지평이 넓어지고 깊이가 더해질수 없다는 점을 감안해서 읽기와 쓰기를 병행한 ‘영역별명저와 창의적 글쓰기’의 의미를 탐색한다. 3장에서는 교양교육의 심화발전을 위해서 ‘영역별명저와 창의적 글쓰기’로부터 ‘클라시카 융합전공’ 으로의 교양교육의 패러다임 전환의 필요성을 제안하고자 한다. 인문·사회·경제·공학 등을 아우르는 ‘클라시카 융합전공’은 교양교육 환경의 질적 변화를 의미한다. 왜냐하면 그것은 단순한 이벤트성에서의 교양교육의 변화가 아니라 교양교육을 질적으로 비약 발전시켜 지속성을 요구하는 일이기 때문이다. 이 지속성이 무엇보다 중요한 의미를 갖는 것은 국책 ACE사업 이후, 말하자면 포스트에이스(post-ACE)의 연속성을 살려내는 것과 무관하지 않기 때문이다. 대개 국책 사업은 종료 시점과 함께동력이 현저하게 떨어지는 경향을 보여 왔던 것도 사실이다. 동력의 상실은 사업 이전으로 회귀하는경향도 보이게 마련이다. D대학의 ‘클라시카 융합전공’은 이 회귀를 차단하는 효과를 지닌다. 학생이 전공 과정에 들어섰기때문에 학생이 이 과정을 끝내기까지는 이 트랙은 지속될 수밖에 없는 노릇이다. 이 점에서 ‘클라시카융합전공’의 교과 과정은 ‘포스트에이스’의 문제를 어느 정도 뛰어넘게 하는 교육편제라고 할 수 있다. 결론에 해당하는 4장은 포스트에이스 공간에서 어떻게 할 것인가의 문제를 단상의 차원에서 서술했다. 국책 ACE사업이 온전히 성공하려면 ACE사업 이후 애초의 기획이 지속·발전될 수 있어야 할것이다. 이의 가능성은 본 연구과제의 대상인 D대학의 ‘클라시카 융합전공’ 교육과정에서 찾을 수있지 않을까 제안해 본다.

영문 초록

This article examines the possibility of furthering the development of Liberal Arts education at the university level based on the experience in the educational field. In general, there has been a long misunderstanding of Liberal Arts education. In short, Liberal Arts in colleges tends not to be of an absolute necessity, but is rather regarded as something akin to intellectual ornamentation, so to speak, or simply as a pursuit that higher education requires. However, in our global age the need for “convergence education” is greater than ever. To meet this need, the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development has been promoting educational reform in order to to break down the walls put up by various majors, and to expand the horizons of knowledge through the national ACE project. The main goal of this project is to strengthen Liberal Arts education, thus allowing for students to keep pace in this age of “convergence education”. In keeping in line with this goal, universities nationwide have reorganized their Liberal Arts curriculum to attract the ACE project, proclaiming to be a “well-teaching university”. The question remains, however: “How do we teach well?” the anser of which pertains to the exact nature of the content being taught. This paper seeks to explore the actual matter of implementing this content based on the model of the development strategy of liberal arts education at the D university. For this exploration, the first chapter dealt with the question, “How do we teach well?”. By doing so, we emphasized the importance of classical reading for the fulfillment of truth inquiry, which is the very spirit of all higher learning, or should be. In Chapter 2, we traced the gradual tactical changes of Liberal Arts education, and explored the meaning of , which is a combination of reading and writing at the D University, for the promotion of “teaching well . The course titled , a research model, was created by reflecting on the fact that writing can t be widened and deepened unless writing is abundant in the subject s brain. In Chapter 3, we proposed the necessity of a paradigm shift in Liberal Arts education, from Reading Masterpieces and Creative Writing to a Classic Convergence Major , for the further development of Liberal Arts education. A Classic Convergence Major , which encompasses the humanities, society, economy, and engineering, means a qualitative change in the general education environment. This is because what we have here is not a change of Liberal Arts education in the eventuality but a demand for continuity by the rapid development of Liberal Arts education. This persistence is of utmost importance because it is not related to maintaining the continuity of post-ACE after the end of the national ACE project. It is true that most national projects have tended to drop significantly at the end of their fixed period, and the loss of power also tends to bring these projects. However, the Classica Convergence Major of D university serves to block this regression. Since the student is enrolled in his or her major, this track will continue until the student finishes their course. In this sense, the curriculum of the Classica Convergence Major is an educational system that overcomes the problem of Post Ace “drop-off” phenomenon. Chapter 4 posed the question, “What is to be done during the post-Ace period?”. For in order for the national ACE project to be fully successful, the original plan should be allowed to continue after the ACE project is completed. This study carefully suggests that the possibility of this can be found in the Classic Convergence Major curriculum at D university.
