애덤 스미스의 미학에 함축된 문화 예술의 경제적 유용성과 공공성의 가치 - ｢국부론｣과 ｢도덕 감정론｣을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 논문은 애덤 스미스의 두 주요 저서인 ｢국부론 The Wealth of Nations｣와 ｢도덕감정론 The Theory of Moral Sentiments｣을 통해 그의 미학적 가치관을 도덕 철학와 경제적 유용성에 입각해 고찰해본다. 전문적인 미학 저서를 남기지 않은 스미스의 미학 사상에 대해서는 그동안 학술적으로 과소평가 되어왔다. 하지만 그의 모든 저작들은 다양한 예술과 문학을 사례로 사용하며 무엇보다 그의 사상에서 미학적 고려는 늘 중심을 차지하고 있다. 이 분야에서 스미스의 공헌은 자유시장경제체 아래서 소비를 진작시키고 사회가 질서와 조화를 유지하는데 문화향유와 사치품의 소비가 어떤 긍정적인 영향을 끼치는지 밀도 있는 분석이라고 할 수 있다. 본 논문은 애덤 스미스가 자신의 도덕철학을 기반으로 설정한 미학과 윤리학, 경제학의 상관관계를 규명하기 위해 우선 애덤 스미스의 철학의 시대적, 사상적 배경을 살펴본다. 먼저 스코틀랜드 계몽주의에 직접적인 영향을 준 잉글랜드의 사회계약론의 전통을 토머스 홉스 및 존 로크의 사상을 기반으로 살펴본 뒤, 이어서 스코틀랜드 계몽주의가 태동한 사회적, 경제적, 정치적 배경을 고찰한다. 이를 기반으로 등장한 스미스의 선배 사상가인 허치슨과 흄의 이론을 살펴보고, 마지막으로 애덤 스미스의 이론들을 ｢국부론｣과 ｢도덕 감정론｣을 중심으로 분석한다.

영문 초록

｢The Wealth of Nations｣ and ｢The Theory of Moral Sentiments｣. Adam Smith neither use the word ‘aesthetic’ nor complete aesthetic works during his life. However, His entire works show abundant evidence of his interest in the fine arts and culture, his familiarity with contemporary debates on matters of taste. Most of all, aesthetic considerations are central to his philosophy. His analysis of arts, aesthetics, and culture in broad terms reveal that those activities make contribution not only to revitalising consumption in commercial society, but also to preserving harmony and order of the society. The research questions as follows: first, where Smith’s aesthetical thoughts related to human natures are originate in? second, to what extent his aesthtetic thoughts are related to moral philosophy and commercial utilities? and third, what sort of public value are accommodated in arts and culture from Smith’s perspective? Before scrutinising Smith’s works, this paper explores the political, economical, and social environment in Scotland of the eighteenth century, which gave rise to his thoughts. Also, theoretical traditions of social contract by Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, and other theories of Scottish philosophers including Francis Hutcheson and David Hume are studied. this paper fundamentally aims to reveal to what extent arts and cultural activities are instrumentally useful in terms of economy and ethics in Smith’s thoughts.
