한국 웹툰에 나타난 성장서사의 공간 연구

국문 초록

서사의 공간은 사건의 배경일 뿐만 아니라 인물의 내면을 형상화하는 중요한 요소이다. 본고에서는 한국 웹툰이 성장서사에서 공간을 구현하는 방식을 에드워드 렐프(Edward Relph)의 장소 정체성 개념을 통해 분석하고, 이를 바탕으로 웹툰의 서사적 변별성을 확인하고자 하였다. 네이버웹툰에 게재된 646편의 웹툰 중 성장서사로 분류한 97편의 텍스트를 분석한 결과, 일반적 인식으로는 청소년에게 있어 내부성의 공간이어야 할 학교나 집이 한국 웹툰에서는 소외와 상실의 공간으로 묘사되는 경우가 지배적임을 확인하였다. 주인공은 공간이동 모티프나 비일상과의 조우 모티프를 통해 소외 공간을 떠나 애착 공간으로의 여정을 시작하는데, 주인공이 성장의 대가로 손에 넣는 애착 공간은 물리적 장소로 제시되기보다는 공동체의 형태로 나타나는 경우가 많았다. 이와 같이 한국 웹툰에 나타나는 성장서사는 청소년 소설을 비롯한 올드 미디어의 계도적이고 교조적인 서사와 변별적 구조를 보인다. 웹툰의 주인공은 기성사회로의 편입을 목표로 하지 않으며, 기성세대의 규율을 수용하고 내면화하지도 않는다. 이들은 자신이 발견한 새로운 세계를 있는 그대로 받아들이며 그곳에 머물기를 선택한다. 예비된 장소를 거부한 주인공의 눈앞에는 광활한 빈 공간만이 기다리지만, 그는 사람을 얻고 공동체를 이룸으로서 자신이 정주할 내면적 장소를 스스로 손에 넣는다. 올드미디어의 일방향적 성장서사에서 소외되어 온 주체들은 웹툰이라는 뉴미디어를 통해 자신들의 성장서사를 공유함으로써 대안 담론을 만들어가고 있으며, 이는 대중서사로서 한국 웹툰이 갖는 가능성을 보여준다.

영문 초록

The space of narratives is not only the background of an event but also an important factor embodying characters’ inner side. This study aimed to analyze the modes of Korean webtoons to construct spaces in growth narratives through place identity concept of Edward Relph and to verify webtoon’s narrative discrimination. As a result of analyzing 97 texts classified as growth narratives among 646 webtoons published in Naver Webtoon, it was confirmed that schools or homes, namely the living spaces to be inner spaces to adolescents in general perception, were dominantly portrayed as the spaces of alienation and loss. Protagonists start journey to attachment spaces, after leaving the alienation spaces though a ‘demension shift’ or ‘encountering with the unusual’ motif. In many cases, the attachment spaces that protagonists get as the return of growth have been revealed as a form of community, rather than a physical place. The growth narratives in Korean webtoons show discriminative structures from the enlightening and doctrinaire narratives, such as novels for adolescents. The leading characters in webtoons do not aim to be involved in the established society, and they do not accept the rules of the established society and do not internalize them. They accept a new world that they discover as it is and select to stay there. Although only spacious space waits in front of the leading characters rejecting already prepared places, they get inner places where they can settle by gaining people and composing a community. The players alienated from the old media’s unilateral growth narratives share their own growth narratives via new media, namely webtoons, and make alternative discourse.
