국문 초록

이 연구는 한국사회에서 문제가 되고 있는 교육열을 비판적으로 성찰하는 데에 목적이 있다. 오늘날 교육열은 제도나 개인의 윤리적 실천만으로 해결이 불가능할만큼 과열된 양상을 보이고 있다. 이 연구는 교육열을 사회적 관계 속에서 생성되고 전염되는 정동으로 이해함으로써, 교육을 둘러싼 욕망이 과도한 수준으로 치닫는 심리사회적 원인을 탐색하였다. 한편, 신자유주의적 삶의 조건 속에서 욕망과 관련된 주요 정동은 ‘불안’이다. 신자유주의 시대의 욕망은 무엇이든 자유롭게 선택할 수 있고 반드시 더 좋은 선택을 해야만 한다는 선택이데올로기의 지배를 받는데, 이때 더 나은 선택에의 욕망은 항상 대타자를 결여하고 있기에 끊임없는 불안을 생성해낸다. 결론적으로, 오늘날의 과도한 교육열 또한 신자유주의적 불안의 징후로서 이해할 수 있다. (1)오늘날 교환가치와 소비로 환원된 교육은 타자와의 무한한 비교가능성과 결코 해소될 수 없는 욕망의 굴레를 생성해낸다. (2)능력주의와 선택의 자유를 기반으로 하는 신자유주의 교육은 주체로 하여금 자기실현의 내러티브를 완성하기 위한 강박적 불안에 빠지도록 만든다. (3)교육적 불안은 불확실한 삶의 조건에서 비롯되기도 하지만, 역설적으로 희망과 관련되기도 한다. 취약한 경제조건 속에서 교육이 나은 미래를 온전히 보장하지 않음에도 불구하고 신자유주의적 교육은 ‘좋은 미래’라는 불확실하고 낙관적인 약속을 생성함으로써 비합리적이고 과잉된 교육열을 이끌어낸다. 이처럼 신자유주의적 불안에 의해 추동되는 교육열은 결국 교육의 본래적 의미가 상실되었음을 방증하는 징후이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is critically reflect on educational fever in Korea. Today, educational fever is overheated so that it cannot be solved by institutional or individual ethical practice. This study explored the psychosocial causes of excessive education fever by understanding it as an affect that is passaged between social relationships. In the conditions of neoliberal life, anxiety is the main emotion related to desire. Neoliberal desire is governed by the tyranny of choice, which means that anything can be freely chosen and a better choice must be made. At this point, the desire for better choice creates anxiety because of the lack of the Other. In conclusion, today s excess of educational fever can be understood as a sign of neoliberal anxiety. (1)Today, education reducible to one of exchange value and consumption creates an infinite comparability with the other and endless desires that can never be resolved. (2)Neoliberal education, based on meritocracy and freedom of choice, makes the subject feel compulsive anxiety to complete the narrative of self-realization. (3)Educational anxiety comes from uncertain living conditions, but also paradoxically from hope. Although education does not fully guarantee a better future in weak economic conditions, neoliberal education makes an unreasonable and excessive enthusiasm by creating an uncertain and optimistic promise of a good future. In short, educational fever driven by neoliberal anxiety means that the original meaning of education is lost.
