치지(致知)와 성의(誠意)의 개념적 관련성 고찰

국문 초록

본고는 『대학』의 치지(致知)와 성의(誠意)의 개념적 관련성을 주희(朱熹)의 『대학장구』와 『대학혹문』을 중심으로 고찰함으로써, 지식과 도덕의 관계를 파악하였다. 치지는 격물(格物)을 바탕으로 이루어지는 나의 지적 활동으로, 사물에 대한 이해에 근거하여 나의 앎을 지극히 하는 활동이며, 나를 둘러싼 세계의 현상적 법칙과 그 법칙대로 되어야만 하는 이유를 파악하는 작업이다. 이러한 이해의 궁극적인 목적은 인간에 대한 이해이며, 인간이 지켜야 할 도덕원리를 파악하는 것이다. 격물·치지는 이미 알고 있는 것에 근거하여 꾸준히 이루어져야 하며, 그 누적을 바탕으로 다른 영역에 대하여 유추할 수 있다. 치지의 다음 단계인 성의는 마음이 발하는 바에서 선(善)과 악(惡)이 갈리는 도덕의 첫 관문이다. ‘뜻을 참되게 한다’는 성의는 선을 좋아하고 악을 싫어하는 것을 진실로 행하는 것이다. 뜻이 참되어지면 스스로 흡족하게 되는데, 이러한 흡족함은 선을 좋아하고 악을 싫어하는 사람의 본성과 일치되기 때문이다. 치지가 잘못되었을 경우 성의는 결코 기대할 수 없으나, 성의를 위해서는 치지뿐만이 아니라 성의만의 노력이 이루어져야 한다. 성의에 도달하기 위해서는 마음이 발하여 의도가 일어날 때 그 기미를 살펴야 한다. 선을 좋아하고 악을 제거해야 하는 것에 대한 우리의 지극한 앎은 마음이 발하는 바의 참됨을 보장하지는 못한다. 뜻이 참되어지기 위해서는, 뜻을 우리의 선한 본성에 대한 앎에 일치시키려는 노력을 끊임없이 해야 한다. 성의가 잘못되었을 때 치지는 그 조회처(照會處)로서 기능한다. 지식은 도덕에 문제가 일어났을 때 그 사태를 시정하는 기준이 된다.

영문 초록

This study aims to examine the relations of knowledge and morality by understanding the conceptual relations of the extension of knowledge(致知) and sincerity(誠意) in Chu Hsi(朱熹)′s 『Great Learning Chapters(大學章句)』 and 『Question and Answer of Great Learning(大學或問)』. The extension of knowledge defined as intellectual activity based on the investigation of things(格物) and understanding of the law and reason of things which exist in the world around us. The ultimate purpose of the activity is to understand the transcendental principle. The activity should be conducted with existing knowledge, accumulated and continued. The inference is its effect. Sincerity(誠意) is the next clause of the extension of knowledge. It is the first gateway of morality in regard to the division of good and evil. Sincerity is defined as removing evils by doing genuine good. Pleasure can be derived in this state not because of the result, but because of human nature. Sincerity cannot be expected in the case the extension of knowledge goes wrong. To determine sincerity, the inner self must be examined with careful examination of intention at the time. The extension of knowledge can not guarantee sincerity. Sincerity requires the effort to follow the point of the extension of knowledge in addition to the achievement to the extension of knowledge. The role of the extension of knowledge in regard to sincerity is the standard to correct the insincerity. Knowledge works as the standard for correcting immorality.
