서구 세계시민교육의 기원

국문 초록

최근 전 지구적 변화와 맞물려 세계시민(cosmopolitēs) 개념은 교육학에서도 주요한 의제로 다루어지고 있다. 본 연구는 서구적 세계시민교육의 기원으로 고대 그리스-로마 시대의 다양한 이론과 실천에 주목하였다. 펠로폰네소스 전쟁으로 고대 그리스의 폴리스 체제가 한계에 봉착한 후 플라톤은 전통적인 소규모 폴리스 체제의 회복을 모색한 반면, 이소크라테스는 그리스인들의 단합과 페르시아 원정을 통해 위기 극복을 시도했다. 헬레니즘 시기는 코이네 그리스어의 일반화와 그리스인들의 동방 이주로 특징지어진다. 이 시기 그리스인들은 공간적 차원에서 그리스의 문화적 전통을 확산시켰으나 문화적 혜택이 원주민들에게 공유되지 않았다는 점에서 온전한 의미의 세계시민주의로 보기에 한계가 있다. 그러나 사상적 차원에서 스토아철학은 전통적인 폴리스 체제에 갇혀있던 사유의 한계를 극복하고 인간의 공간적 정체성 확장에 기여했다. 그리스 문화를 수용하며 성장한 로마제국은 영원한 로마(Roma Aeterna) 개념을 통해 시민들에게 보편적 시민 개념을 정착시킨다. 당초 로마제국의 속주 지배 차원에서 이루어진 것이지만 로마의 문화가 제국 전체로 전파되면서 로마문명의 보편화 차원의 세계시민 양성에 기여하게 되었다. 마르쿠스 아우렐리우스로 대표되는 철학자들은 이상적 인간상과 시민성에 대한 통찰을 제시하며 고대사회 세계시민의 원형을 정립하는데 공헌했다.

영문 초록

In this paper, I tried to discuss contemporary issues by focusing on world civilization and world citizen education in the ancient Greco-Roman period. Lots of philosophers in ancient Athens tried to resolve the social crisis by proposing a change or regeneration of the polis system. Isocrates attempted to overcome the crisis by Pan-Hellenism: unity and harmony of the Greeks and Persian expedition. Diogenes proposes the term and concept of cosmopolites, defining the whole world as a polis, instead of specifying a particular polis. The Hellenistic period, which originated in the eastern expedition of Alexandros, is characterized by the generalization of koine Greek and the migration of Greeks. At this time, the Greeks succeeded in opening up the possibility of a global citizen in that they could enjoy the Greek cultural tradition in a wide area, but this cultural heritage was limited in that it was not sufficiently applied to non-Greeks. On the other hand, Stoic philosophy overcame the reason for the human being trapped in the traditional polis system and contributed to the extension of a human s spatial identity. The Roman Empire, which grew up embracing Greek culture, succeeded in forming the unity and unity of citizens through the concept of eternal Roma. It started with the goal of consolidating the ruling dominance of the Roman Empire in the first place, but with the spread of the Roman culture throughout the empire, it contributed to the cultivation of the global citizen, which is summarized as the universal civilization of Roman civilization. The philosophers represented by Marcus Aurelius presented insights into the ideal human image and citizenship and contributed to establishing the prototype of an ancient society educated cosmopolitan.
