국문 초록

이 연구는 우리 교육이 필요에 따른 구체적인 결과를 도출하는 유형의 사고에 경도되어 있는 경향을 문제사태로 주목하고, 이에 대한 대안으로 의미추구를 목적으로 하는 한나 아렌트의 사유 개념을 탐색하고자 한다. 아렌트는 근대적 이성에 기반한 인식(knowing)과, 의미탐구로서의 사유(thinking)를 구분하고, 후자를 모든 사람들이 행사해야 하는 정신활동으로 제안하고 있다. 아렌트의 사유개념은 근대적 이성에 대한 비판과 반성의 과정에서 제기되었으나 그것의 장점까지 모두 버리지는 않으면서 오늘의 맥락에 맞게 재구성해 내고 있다는 점에서 포스트모더니즘의 해체주의와는 거리를 둔다. 이와 같은 아렌트의 사유개념은 문제해결식의 확실한 지식이나 결과를 추구하는 근대적 인식에 경도된 지금의 사고력 교육을 비판적으로 재고 할 수 있는 계기를 제공해 준다. 현상세계에 대한 검토하기를 통해 의미를 탐구하는 사유활동으로 사고의 범위와 역할을 확장함으로써 학생들은 자신만의 의미를 재구성할 수 있는 사고의 능력을 기를 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to explore the concept of the ability to think, which has traditionally been the essential aim of education. In order to answer this question, I will inquire into Arendt’s concept of thinking. Arendt distinguished thinking in the terms of the quest for meaning from knowing based on the modern intellect, and proposed the former as an activity of the mind that should be exercised by every human being. Arendt’s concept of thinking originated from the process of criticizing and examining the modern intellect, but is noticeably different from the postmodern de-constructivism in the sense that it does not entirely disagree with knowing, and reconstructs it in a contemporary context. This concept of thinking is a meaningful conceptual device that can be used to critically reconsider the present education of thinking which is excessively inclined towards the modern concept of knowing which seeks only definite knowledge and results associated with problem-solving. Thinking can be understood as the quest for meaning through the means of examining the phenomena, and through this process will students be able to develop their ability of thinking, and reestablish ‘meaning’ in their own unique way.
