국문 초록

매리 워녹(Mary Warnock)은 최근 배아연구의 제한기간-14일 규정(14-day rule)을 확대하려는 시도가 미끄러운 경사길 논변으로 연결될 수 있음을 우려한다. 이에 착안하여, 본 연구는 배아연구의 14일 규정과 그 이후의 논의를 살펴본다. 일반적으로 미끄러운 경사길 논변은 첫 스텝을 떼기 전에 신중할 것을 경고한다. 반면 본 연구는 이미 내딛은 첫 스텝과 그 이후의 현상을 경험적 증거들과 함께 논증한다. 그리고 미끄러운 경사길 현상의 첫 스텝에 함의된 미끄러짐(slippage)의 요소들-핵심 용어 모호함, 규정의 전이, 도덕적 추론의 문제 등을 분석한다. 그런 다음 이 요소들이 배아연구의 제한기간 확대 논의에서 어떠한 역할을 수행하는지 파악한다. 이를 통해 배아연구 제한기간 확대 논의는 인류의 선을 도모하기 위한 목적으로 밀어붙인다고 하더라도, 그것이 순기능만 갖지 않음을 논증한다. 마지막으로 미끄러운 경사길의 논변에서 우리의 위치와 그 방향성을 비판적으로 고찰하면서, 과학기술의 발전과 그 적용에 대한 윤리적 성찰의 필요성을 강조한다.

영문 초록

This study begins with Mary Warnock s question about an attempt to expand the 14-day rule for embryo research. Warnock fears that if the 14-day rule were to be extended, it could lead to a slippery slope argument. In this regard, the issues of the 14-day rule for embryo research, and its extension are examined. In general, the slippery slope arguments warn us to be careful before taking the first step. On the other hand, this study demonstrates the slippery slope argument that has already taken the first and subsequent steps along with empirical evidences. And it analyzes the factors of slippage implicated in the first step of slippery slope phenomena into the vagueness of a key term, transfer of a principle, and the problem of moral reasoning. It then examines how these factors play a role in the discussion of the extended period of embryo research. In doing so, this study shows that even if the discussions of the extended period of embryo research are pushed to promote human good, it does not have solely advantages we may want. Finally, critically considering the state of affairs in which we are involved in a sticky sequence of consequences from the slippage, we emphasize the need for ethical reflection on the development and application of science and technology.
