개화기 여행담론과 ‘호연지기’ 기르기

국문 초록

본고는 개화기 여행담론의 형성과 여행을 통한 호연지기의 관계성을 규명하고 있다. 1876년 개항 이후 한국사회는 커다란 전환기를 맞이하였다. 서구문명의 수용으로 점차 문명개화를 일상문화 속에서도 체험을 하게 되었다. 그 중의 하나가 여행이었다. 여행은 전근대나 근대에서도 여전히 자기의 성찰을 통해 새로운 발견을 하고자 하였다. 뿐만 아니라 새로운 환경에 대한 표상으로 여행기를 남기기도 하였다. 여행기는 여행을 통한 심신을 달래고 지식을 습득할 수 있다는 점은 여행을 보다 일상문화로 자리 잡게 하는데 일정한 영향을 주었다. 또한 개항 이후 철도 등 교통망이 확장됨에 따라 지역에 따라 ‘관광단’이 조직되어 명승고적과 산업시찰 등을 통해 여행을 재생산하였다. 관광단은 여행으로만 그치는 것이 아니라 여행담론을 형성하는데 기여하였다. 개화기 여행은 문명개화와 관련하여 의미를 부여하고 있다. 그 가운데 심신을 수양하고 호연지기를 기르는 내용을 포함하고 있다. 여행은 “빛나는 것을 넓혀 다소 견문한 바 같고 다름으로 비루함을 녹여내고 피아의 구분을 서로 융합하여 도리가 하나가 될 수 있도록 다함으로써 천하가 하나 되는 기상이 있게 하고자 함”을 드러내고 있듯이, ‘천하가 하나 되는 기상’ 즉 호연지기의 궁극적 의미를 담고 있다. 수학여행 역시 교육의 연장이었으며, 수학여행이 단순한 유람이 아니라 호연지기를 바탕으로 하는 학문의 토대임을 확인할 수 있다. 여행은 수양의 방법으로 활용되었다. 여행과 수양의 관계를 의지의 단련이 정신적 수양이고 골육의 단련이 신체의 수양이라고 하며, 여행은 인생수양의 긴요한 효익을 구비하고 있다고 밝힌 바 있듯이, 여행을 통한 통찰력과 학식, 탐험정신 등이 수양의 요인인 것이다. 이러한 인식은 맹자의 호연지기에서도 잘 드러나고 있는 것이다. 그러나 무엇보다도 호연지기는 대개 소년이나 청년들에게 웅대한 기상 또는 진취적 기상을 기르거나 키워가는 표상이었으며, 여행은 소년들에게 지식, 용기, 모험심, 끈기, 기운 등을 주는 호연지기의 장이라고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This article examines the relationship between the formation of travel discourse and develop great spirit through travel in the modern transition period. Since its opening in 1876, Korean society has had a big turning point. With the acceptance of Western civilization, we gradually experienced civilization-changing in everyday culture. One of them was travel. Travel, in modern times and modern times, was still to make new discoveries through self-reflection. In addition, he left a travel plane as a token of his new environment. The fact that travel is able to soothe the mind and body through travel and acquire knowledge has influenced travel to become a more everyday culture. In addition, as the transportation network, including railways, was expanded after the opening of the port, a ‘tourism group’ was organized according to the region, reproducing the trip through famous records and industrial inspections. Tourism groups contributed not only to travel, but to forming a travel narrative. The trip during the enlightenment period is meaningful in relation to civilization. Among them are the training of the mind and body and the cultivation of a great spirit. The journey has the ultimate meaning of “a weather in which the heavens become one,” as it reveals, “I spread out the bright thing and melted the feeling of envy as if I had seen it a little, and blend the divisions of they and we into one, so that the world can become one.” School trips were also an extension of education, and one can see that school trips are not just a pleasure trip, but a foundation of learning based on the drama. Travel was used as a means of training. The relationship between travel and training is called mental training, the training of the bone marrow is said to be the training of the body, and travel has the vital benefits of life training, such as insight, knowledge and spirit of exploration through travel. This perception is well demonstrated in the smoke screen of the blind. Above all, however, the great spirit was usually a symbol of fostering or nurturing a grand or enterprising spirit for boys and young people, and traveling was a stage for great spirit that gave boys knowledge, courage, adventure, persistence, energy, etc.(Cheongam College)
