조나단 에드워즈의 언약신학의 빛에서 본 교회와 국가의 관계성 연구

국문 초록

패리 밀러와 그의 지지자들은 조나단 에드워즈와 뉴잉글랜드 청교도들의 관계를 불연속성 이라는 전제위에서 그들의 국가론을 읽는다. 그들에 따르면, 뉴잉글랜드 청교도들의 언약 국가론은 개인의 자유를 국가와 교회에 귀속시켰다. 또한 패리 밀러와 그의 추종자들은 에드워즈에게 언약신학이 존재하지 않는 듯 묘사하지만, 실상, 에드워즈의 언약사상은 그의 청교도 선조들과 유사한 것으로 나타난다. 특별히 에드워즈와 그의 청교도 선조들의 국가언약과 시민법에 대한 관점은 그들이 교회와 국가의 관계를 구속사적 관점에서 이해했음을 보여준다. 언약신학의 중심주제인 구속사적 관점의 국가론을 살펴보기 위해 본고는 18세기 뉴잉글랜드의 지리/정치/문화적 배경에 관한 연구로 시작한다. 국가언약사상이 잘 반영되어 있는 존 윈스롭 (John Winthrop)과 에드워즈의 설교는 그들이 시민 정부와 교회 정부를 상호 보완의 관계 속에서 이해하고 있음을 드러낸다. 두 정부는 하나님의 나라의 재건이라는 목적 안에서 구별되나 결코 분리되지 않는다. 에드워즈의 구속사적 관점은 그의 청교도 선조들과의 연속성 관계뿐 아니라 교회와 국가의 관계를 이해하는 데 있어서 필수적인 역할을 한다.

영문 초록

Perry Miller contended that while Edwards abandoned the covenant scheme, his Puritan predecessors were advocates of federal theology, which is quite different from Calvin’s theology. On the contrary, the close relationship between the church and government we have outlined in the thought of Edward bears a striking resemblance to his Puritan forebears. In Edwards’ thought, although there is a distinction between the church and nation, both are considered as organic whole in terms of redemptive history. As in the case of New England in 18th century, the implication of national covenant rests on its context-its geographical, political, and cultural consideration in rather than on a set of preconceived theological premise in the scholars mentioned above. The example of the covenant in John Winthrop’s and Edwards’ sermons in the form of jeremiad demonstrates that Edwards’ understanding of national covenant avoids potential tensions between the church and the state, but demonstrates the inherent unity between them. The same is true for the reading of Edwards’s civil law, which has several implications for redemptive history. Not only does civil law serves the church worship, but it also functions as part of the history of redemption.
