19세기 하층 여성인물 초옥의 정(貞)에 대한 해석

국문 초록

1860년대 한양을 배경으로 남녀의 만남과 이별을 그린 <포의교집>은 애정전기의 장르 관습을 비틀어 창작한 19세기 후반 조선의 애정소설이다. 이 작품에는 19세기 후반 한양의 도시적 면모와 유흥적 분위기가 구체적으로 그려지고, 여종 출신의 유부녀인 17세 초옥과, 과거를 준비하면서 서울 지인 집에 기숙하는 가난한 40대 유부남 이생의 만남이 서로 다른 기대를 가지고 성사된다. 이 작품은 특히 중세 한문 교양을 갖춘 하층 여성 주인공이 포의지교(布衣之交)와 지기(知己)를 꿈꾸면서 적극적으로 불륜 관계에 들어가는데, 그녀는 이런 자신의 행동을 숨기고자 하는 것이 아니라 오히려 ‘정행(貞行)’으로 주장한다. 이생을 향한 그녀의 사랑은 열렬하며 그 진정성을 인정할 만하다. 그런데 불륜을 저지르면서 이를 ‘정행(貞行)’으로 주장하는 초옥의 주장은 일견 모순된 것처럼 들린다. 본고는 모순인 것처럼 보이는 그녀의 주장에 담긴 논리를 찾아보고자 하는 문제의식에서 비롯되었다. 이 문제에 접근하는 과정으로 초옥의 적극성의 원인에 대해서도 다시 천착하여 초옥의 적극적인 인물 형상이 애정전기의 관습에 의한 것이 아니라 그녀의 내적 동기에 의한 것임을 밝혔다. 또 그녀가 보이는 지기(知己)에 대한 소망이 19세기 소설사에서는 여성과 관련한 제재로 나타나고 있음도 밝혔다. 이 작품에서 지기에 대한 소망은 하층 여성 초옥이 하층이라는 신분과 여성이라는 젠더를 동시에 극복하고자 했던 바람과 맞물려 있는 것이었다. 또한 초옥이 자신의 행동을 정행이라고 주장한 배경에는 이생을 향한 그녀의 ‘마음’이 자리하고 있었다. 자신의 ‘마음’을 중요하게 언급하는 그녀가 주장하는 정(貞)은 조선조의 여성 섹슈얼리티에 대한 보편적 도덕률인 정절 이데올로기와는 전혀 다른 맥락의 성격을 지닌 것으로, 사랑이 있는 동안만 지켜야 할 정조(貞操)가 있다는 1920년대 김원주의 주장을 환기시키는 바가 있다. 이 점에서 표현은 똑같이 정(貞)이지만 정(貞)에 대한 그녀의 당당함은 정절 이데올로기에 입각한 정(貞)/정행(貞行)의 주장과는 차별화되며 오히려 근대적인 사례를 환기하는 것임을 시론적으로 해석하였다.

영문 초록

Poui-gyojip(布衣交集) twists the narrative conventions of the genre of Romantic Jeongi (愛情傳奇). Set in the 1860s Hanyang (present day Seoul), the novel describes the meeting and parting of Cho-ok, a 17-year-old married woman who used to be a servant, and Lee Saeng, a poor 40-year-old married man who is staying at a friend’s house in Seoul while preparing for the civil service exam. Their love story is portrayed on the background of the pleasure-seeking urban life of Hanyang in the late 19th century. Cho-ok is educated and cultured, but is from the lower class. She begins an extramarital relationship with Lee Saeng, dreaming of a friendship with a jigi (知己, an appreciative friend) that would transcend the barrier of social positions. Rather than trying to conceal her adultery, Cho-ok argues that what she is doing is a chaste conduct (貞行). Her love for Lee Saeng is indeed passionate and sincere. However, her argument for her chaste conduct still sounds ironic because her relationship with Lee Saeng is extramarital. This study intends to understand the logic in her seemingly ironic argument. This study argues that the female protagonist is described as an active character not because of the narrative conventions of Romantic Jeongi but because of the centrality of Cho-ok’s internal motives in the formation of the relationship. In addition, it also illuminates that the desire for true friendship with a jigi is one of the main topics related to female characters in the 19th century Korean novels. Cho-ok in Poui-gyojip is different from other female protagonists in general, male-centered Romantic Jeongi in terms that her desire for jigi is interlinked with her wish to overcome both her social position and gender limitations. Besides, her definition of chastity is based on the sincerity of her heart rather than on the code of morality imposed on her by the patriarchal society in the Joseon period. He definition of chastity is similar to the argument of Kim Won-ju in the 1920s that one should keep her chastity only while she has love for her partner. Cho-ok feels of herself as honorable and chaste because she has always been truthful and sincere about her heart. This study argues that Cho-ok has a rather modern understanding of ‘chastity’ and ‘chaste conduct’ than the general usage of the word based on the moral code of women’s sexuality in the Joseon period.
