감정 조작과 과부-열녀담의 정전화

국문 초록

본고는 감정을 중심으로 <열녀함양박씨전>을 분석한 것이다. 일견 모순된 것처럼 보이는 <열녀함양박씨전>의 서문과 본전이 서로 긴밀하게 조응하며 하나의 주제를 구현하고 있다는 전제에서 출발하여, 박지원이 이상적인 열녀의 상을 그려내기 위해 여성의 감정을 특정한 방식으로 배치하거나 조작하고 있음을 확인하였다. 서문의 앞부분에서는 ‘사회적 원자’ 개념을 원용하여, 열녀 풍속의 확산이 원자들의 상호 모방과 강화 행동의 한 사례로 이해될 수 있음을 분석하였다. 이때 모방은 생존을 위한 전략이지만, 때로는 상식적이지 않은 행동으로 강화되기도 하는데, 박지원에게 열녀들의 맹목적인 순절은 이를 잘 보여주는 현상으로 포착되었다. 그리고 박지원은 모방과 강화를 통해 재생산된 열녀와 그들을 입전한 열녀전에 대해 비판적 태도를 보이고 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 다음으로 수절과부와 순절과부의 대비적 형상화 양상을 살피고, 이를 통해 작품의 주제를 도출했다. 연암은 수절과부라는 허구적 인물을 통해 진실한 열이란 무엇인가를 보여주려고 했으며, 실재했던 함양박씨의 죽음을 통해서는 모방된 열의 허구성을 비판했다. 그 과정에서 활용한 감정 조작의 방식은 다음과 같다. 우선 수절과부에 대해서는 그녀가 직접 자신의 감정을 발화하게 하였으며, 곡진한 묘사와 닳아버린 동전의 존재를 통해 독자로 하여금 그러한 인물의 실존을 의심할 수 없도록 만들었다. 반면 함양박씨에 대해서는 감정을 소거하고 다른 사람의 입을 통해 그녀의 행적만을 전달하였다. 그리고 함양박씨의 죽음이 과부에 대한 사회적 시선, 닥쳐올 현실적 역경에 대한 포기에 가까운 것이라며 열행의 허위성을 드러냈다. 즉 박지원은 수절과부의 정욕과 감정을 곡진하게 부각시킴으로써 인간의 진실성은 감정을 지닌 주체로부터 찾아지는 것임을 역설하고, 감정 없이 명분에 따라 모방한 열행과의 대비를 통해 이를 더욱 강조했다. 이러한 대비에는 세상을 책임지는 원기로서의 사(士)이자, 백성에게 예를 가르쳐야 하는 위정자로서의 연암의 계급의식이 투영되어 있다.

영문 초록

This paper analyzes Park ji won’s focusing on manipulation of emotions. Starting from the premise that the preface and the main story of seemed to be contradictory but closely embody one theme, Park Ji-won was confirmed that he was placing or manipulating emotions of faithful widow in a specific way for making image of ideal woman who kept royalty to her husband. In the first part of the preface, borrowing the concept of ‘social atom’ from social physics, we analyzed that the spread of faithful behavior of women could be understood as an example of imitation and reinforcement behavior. Atoms are influenced by other atoms to imitate or reinforce their behavior and form a pattern in real world. Human behavior as a social atom is not much different. In most cases, imitation is a strategy for survival to social atom, but sometimes it is reinforced by actions that are not common sense, and Park Ji-won captured the blind death of widows as a phenomenon. In addition, Park Ji-won showed that he was critical to reproduced yeol-neyo and yeol-neyo-jeon reproduced by imitation and reinforcement. Next, we examined the contrasting aspects of the faithful widow and the widow who commit suicide and derived the theme of the work. Yeonam tried to show what true ‘yeol’ was through a fictional character, a faithful widow, and criticized the falsehood of imitation through the death of Ham Yang-Park. The method of emotion manipulation used in the process is as follows. First of all, faithful widow who did not commit suicide made her own emotion, and she made her readers unquestionable about the existence of such a character through the crooked description and the existence of coins worn out. On the other hand, Park ji-won revealed the falsehood of indulgence by eliminating HamYang-park’s emotions and conveying her tracks only through the mouths of others. And he revealed the falsehood of ‘yeol’, saying that it was close to the declaration of abandonment to the social gaze to the widow and realistic adversity In other words, By highlighting the sexual desire and emotions of the widow, he emphasized that the truth of human being is found in the subject with emotions, and emphasized this by contrasting with the abusive imitation according to the cause without emotion. This contrast reflects the class consciousness of Yeonam as a spirit in charge of the world and a man of authority to teach the people morals.
