집안 여성을 기억하는 방식

국문 초록

본고는 성해응이 집안 여성에 대해 쓴 기록 21편을 대상으로 성해응이 집안 여성의 형상화에서 중요하게 드러내는 가치가 무엇인지 살펴보고자 했다. 효열이라는 윤리적 가치가 집안의 여성에게 적용되지 않는 것은 아니나 집안 여성들에게 중요한 덕목은 가문의 형성과 유지에 필요한 역할과 관련되어 나타난다. 연경재 성해응의 집안 여성 기록에서 드러나는 특징은 크게 세 가지로 정리할 수 있다. 첫째, 부덕의 전범으로서 교육하는 어머니상을 부각하는 점이 특징적이다. 가문을 지탱하고 유지하기 위해 교육에 온힘을 쏟은 어머니 전주 이씨는 집안 여성의 전범이 되는 인물이지만 순응적 면모보다는 바른 결정을 위해서 할 말은 하는 태도가 부각된다. 성해응은 부덕의 전범으로 교육의 주체인 가문 여성을 기억하고 기록하면서 이들이 유지해온 가문의 당위성을 강조하고 있는 것으로 보인다. 두 번째로 성해응은 집안 여성의 뛰어난 재주와 행실, 특히 스스로 교육 주체가 되는 똑똑한 여성을 적극적으로 드러냈다는 점을 들 수 있다. 성해응은 타고난 명석함과 깊은 학문적 경지까지 보여준 집안 여성들을 통해 가문의 수준을 드러내고자 했던 것으로 보인다. 부덕의 품성이나 여공뿐 아니라 탁월한 식견을 지니고 학문적 경지를 이룬 여성은 성해응 집안의 위상을 드높이는 데 일정한 역할을 했으리라 생각한다. 마지막으로 성해응은 자신의 감정을 표현하는 개성적 개인으로 여성을 그려냈다는 점이 독특하다고 하겠다. 성해응의 기록에는 타고난 효성이나 정성스러운 봉양, 온화하고 유순한 성품과는 거리가 있는 개성적 여성의 모습이 여실히 드러난다. 이는 객관적이고 비판적인 시선에서 나온 것이라기보다 익숙한 대상의 핍진한 기억에서 길어낸 살아 있는 여성 인물의 형상화라 하겠다. 성해응은 집안 여성들을 애정어린 시선으로 기억하면서 이들에 대해서는 적극적이고 주체적인 여성의 모습을 부각하는 한편, 하나로 일반화할 수 없는 개성적 개인으로서의 모습을 포착하려 했다. 집안 여성을 기억하고 평가하는 이러한 행위는 성해응에게 자신의 집안이 ‘좋은’ 집안임을 확인시키는 작업이었을 것으로 보인다. 서얼이지만 대대로 훌륭한 인물을 배출해낸 가문에서 이러한 여성 기록은 나름의 가문의식을 형성하고 강화하는 데 일정한 역할을 했으리라 본다.

영문 초록

This study aimed to examine how Sung, Hae-eung recorded his own family women, targeting 21 records〔祭文(message of condolence), 墓誌銘(epitaph), 行狀(records of a deceased person’s life) etc.〕 written by Sung, Hae-eung. The important virtues for the family women are related to the role necessary for the formation and maintenance of the family. I think Sung, Hae-eung has embodied the virtues of a characteristic family woman, which has played a certain role in revealing the pride of his family. There are three main characteristics in Sung Hae-eung’s family women records. First, The image of ‘educational mother’ is described as a model woman. The great-grandmother, Jeonju Lee, devoted her energy to raising her children to support her family. She was a model for a woman in the family and a person who becomes a typical virtues of the family, but she has an attitude to say something for the right decision rather than being accomodative, and Sung, Hae-eung has highlighted this character. The second feature of Sung, Hae-eung’s family women is that they are very talented. The family women showed their natural clarity and deep academic status. Sung, Hae-eung shows that they are individuals with the value of existence, not only as members of their families. They were not only virtuous and good at women’s work, but they had excellent knowledge and reached a high academic level, and I think they played a certain role in raising the status of the Sung, Hae-eung family. The last characteristics of the Sung, Hae-eung family women is that they reveals their unique characteristics as the subject of emotion. There are the unique woman who is far from natural Hyo(孝), sincere Bongyang(奉養), and the gentle character in the record of Sung, Hae-eung. This is the image of a living female character raised from the depleted memory of a familiar object. Sung, Hae-eung looked at the family women with a loving gaze and tried to capture the individual who could not be generalized as one while emphasizing the active and subjective women. He remembered them in a way that revealed the individual s personality without putting the standard of exemplary. This act of remembering and evaluating the family women seems to have been a task to confirm that her family is a ‘good-noble and dignified’ family to him. The family of Sung, Hae-eung was a family that produced the great figures for generations, although it was a family of Seo-oel(庶孼, descendant of a concubine, illegitimate son in the Joseon Dynasty), and this female record would have played a certain role in forming and strengthening their own family pride.
