국문 초록

이 논문은 이익이 이맹휴의 저작을 널리 알려서 역사적 인물로 만들려고 했던 노력을 소개하기 위해 작성하였다. 이익은 외아들인 이맹휴가 사망한 이후 그가 제시했던 현실 개혁의 방안들이 다른 사람들에 의해 실현되기를 기대하였다. 이익은 이맹휴의 저작들을 깨끗이 정리하여 주변 인물에게 널리 소개하였고, 자신의 저작에서 이맹휴가 제시한 방안들을 적극적으로 활용하였다. 이익이 이맹휴의 저작을 소개한 인물은 경기도와 경상도에 거주하는 남인계 인물이었다. 이익은 특히 현직 관리들이 이맹휴의 뜻을 국왕 영조에게 전달하기를 기대하였다. 이익이 소개한 이맹휴의 저작은 현실을 개혁할 방안을 정리한 『봉사』 1권, 조선과 일본과의 외교 관계를 정리한 『춘관지』 4권과 『접왜역년고』 2권, 이맹휴가 관리로 있으면서 기록한 일기인 『거관록』과 『거현록』 등이 있었다. 이익은 이맹휴가 남겨놓은 개혁 방안들을 다른 사람들이 실천해 주는 것이 사망한 아들의 뜻을 이루는 길이라 생각했다. 이익은 이맹휴의 현실 개혁의 방안을 자주 활용하였다. 그는 조선과 일본의 외교에서 조선 국왕의 물품이 제대로 대접받지 못하는 현실을 비판하였고, 장차 일본의 천황이 복권된다면 조선 국왕과 천황이 대등한 의례를 할 수 없게 될 것을 우려하였다. 이익은 국가 재정을 개선하기 위해 수레를 사용하자고 제안하였고, 비옥한 땅에 있는 둔전의 세금을 온전히 거두자고 주장하였다. 또한 그는 국방력을 강화하기 위해 매월 장수의 능력을 시험하여 녹봉을 주며, 수군의 전투력을 강화하기 위해 섬마을 백성들을 활용하자고 하였다. 이들은 모두 이맹휴가 제안했던 방안이었다. 이맹휴의 저작은 주로 규장각의 검서관을 역임한 관리들이 이용하였고, 『춘관지』가 가장 많이 인용되었다. 이맹휴의 저작은 많이 있었지만 그가 남겨놓은 뜻은 잘 활용되지 않았다.

영문 초록

This paper was written to introduce Yi Ik’s efforts to make Yi Maeng-hue a historical figure by making his books widely known. Yi Ik expected the life reform measures proposed by his only son Yi Maeng-hue to be realized by others after the death of his son. Yi Ik wrote clean copies of Yi Maeng-hue’s books and introduced them to the people around him and actively used the reform measures proposed by his son in his own books. Yi Ik introduced Yi Maeng-hue’s books to the figures of Namin school living in Gyeonggi-do and Gyeongsang-do. Yi Ik especially expected incumbent officials to convey his son’s message to King Yeongjo. Yi Maeng-hue’s books, introduced by Yi Ik, included one book of “Bongsa” that outlined ways to reform the reality, four volumes of “Chungwanji” and two volumes of “Jeobwae-yeongnyeongo” which outlined diplomatic relations with the Joseon Dynasty and Japan, “Geogwanrok” and “Geohyeonrok” which were diaries recorded when he was the central and local officials. Yi Ik thought that other people’s practice of the reform measures left over by Yi Maeng-hue was the way to fulfill the will of his late son. Yi Ik often used Yi Maeng-hue’s real-life reform measures. He criticized the fact that Joseon kings’ goods were not properly treated in the diplomacy of Joseon and Japan, and feared that if Japan’s emperor was reinstated in the future, Joseon king and Japan’s emperor would not be able to hold equal ceremonies. Yi Ik suggested using carts to improve national finances, and insisted on collecting the full tax of a farm cultivated by troops in fertile land. He also suggested to test the generals’ ability every month and give them salaries according to their capabilities for strengthening their defense. And he suggested using the people of the island village to strengthen the fighting power of the naval forces. They all were reform measures proposed by his late son. Yi Maeng-hue’s books were mainly used by officials who served as Geomseogwan of the Gyujanggak, and among them, “Chungwanji” was cited the most. There were a lot of Yi Maeng-hue’s books, but the meaning he left behind didn’t come true well.
