문화연구 위기의 이론적 기원과 알튀세르에 관한 기억

국문 초록

이 글은 문화연구의 지적⋅정치적 위기와 알튀세르에 대한 이론적 억제가 가지는 상관성을 논구한다. 알튀세르를 통한 지적 혁신의 기회는 경험주의로 대변되는 영국의 지적 전통과 근본적으로 불화하는 것이기도 했다. 문화마르크스주의 전통에서 톰슨은 알튀세르를 이론적 환원주의자로 낙인찍었으며 윌리엄스는 정치적 주체의 기획을 알튀세르주의적인 계급 노선이 아 닌 그람시주의적인 대중 노선으로 변환시켰다. 그 결과 문화마르크스주의는 계급 형세에 대한 분석으로부터 멀어지게 됐고, 문화연구는 그 출발점에서부터 더 이상은 마르크스주의 내에서의 이론적 쇄신을 도모하는 것이 불가능하게 됐다. 홀은 과잉결정 개념을 비롯해 알튀세르주의에 대해 호의를 보이기는 했지만, 그에게 있어 알튀세르의 구조주의적 마르크스주의는 여전히 자율적인 정치 주체의 형성이라는 문제를 식별해내지 못하는 이론적 체계로 인식되었다. 그람시주의의 전격적 수용의 결과로 문화연구는 자본주의가 아닌 모더니티를 비평 대상으로 삼게 되었으며, 의도치 않은 결과였을 테지만 마르크스주의와의 접합을 상실한 채로 대중주의적 해석학으로 경도되기에 이르렀다. 오늘날 저항의 가능성을 원천적으로 내부화하는 후기-자본주 의의 문화논리는 문화연구의 이론적 쇄신을 요청하고 있으며, 이는 메타적 지배 형식에 대한 탁월한 통찰을 제공하는 알튀세르주의를 소환하는 맥락을 형성하고 있다.

영문 초록

This article discusses the relationship between the intellectual/political crisis of cultural studies and the theoretical suppression of Althusser. The opportunity for intellectual innovation through Althusser was fundamentally at odds with the British intellectual tradition represented by empiricism. In the cultural Marxist tradition, E. P. Thompson stigmatized Althusser as a theoretical reductionist, and Raymond Williams transformed the planning of political subjects into Gramsian people’s line rather than Althusserian class lines. As a result, cultural Marxism has moved away from the analysis of class configuration, and cultural studies no longer allow for theoretical renewal within Marxist tradition. Hall favored Althusserism, including the concept of over-determination, but for him, Althusser’s structuralist Marxism was still perceived as a theoretical system that did not resolve the problem of the formation of autonomous political subjects. As a result of the acceptance of Gramsciism, cultural studies have turned to modernity, not capitalism. And cultural studies have gradually turned to popularist hermeneutics, losing their connection with Marxism. Today, postcapitalism’s cultural logic, which internalizes the possibility of resistance, calls for a theoretical renewal of cultural studies. This forms the context for Althusserianism, which provides an excellent insight into the form of meta-domination.
