서예 ‘用筆法’의 핵심, ‘提按法’의 原理

국문 초록

서예라는 영역에는 크게 두 가지의 개념이 상호보완적 관계를 이루고 있다. 하나는 서예를 잘 하기 위한 방법론으로 실기 중심의 기법학습이며, 다른 하나는 서예가 과연 무엇인가를 추구하는 경계론으로써 이론적 바탕의 정신수양이다. 그러나 이 두 개념의 관계는 학습자에게 장시간의 투자라는 부담감을 줄 뿐만 아니라, 현실적 단점으로 변질되어 서예문화권 형성에 적지 않은 걸림돌이 되고 있다. 서예의 시간적 요구에 대해 반박의 여지는 없다. 다만 학습내용의 지루함과 광대함으로 관심마저 잃어가고 있는 현실은, 교육방식의 개선으로 극복가능하다고 본다. 현재 서예교육의 일반적인 문제는 서예학습자가 ‘用筆法’, 특히 그 중 핵심이라 볼 수 있는 ‘提按法’의 이해정도가 부족하다는 점이다. 이는 무엇보다도 서예에 대한 설명이 추상적이며, 과정보다는 體本·교재 등 결과물위주의 교육방식 때문으로 본다. 여기에 추상적 설명의 이해는 거의 학습자 스스로의 몫이라서, 입문자의 경우는 시간과 의지의 소모에 비해 학습방향의 정체성혼란이 야기되기 쉽다. 또한 徒弟式교육풍토의 고착화와 공교육기관(초등학교)의 서예교육환경미비 등도 원인이라 여긴다. 본 논문은 이상과 같은 한국서예교육의 현실적 애로사항에 조금이나마 방향성을 제시하기 위한 연구이다. 결론적으로, 모든 입문자의 서예지도는 徒弟式·공교육을 불문하고 用筆法을 파악하기 위한 提按法에 비중을 두어야 한다. 그런 이후에 점차 개성을 접목시키는 경계론을 적용시켜야 효율적이며, 점진적이나마 서예문화권 형성에도 기여할 수 있다고 여긴다.

영문 초록

In the area of calligraphy, the methodology based on practical skill and the boundary theory with a theoretical basis are complementary to each other. The relationship between these two concepts is a real disadvantage that not only requires a lot of time for the learner but also the learning contents are boring and too broad. As a result, it is hindering the formation of a calligraphy culture. There is no denying that it takes some time to get used to the brush and to be good at calligraphy, but the phenomenon of losing people’s interest due to the boredom and vastness of learning contents seems to be able to be overcome by the improvement of education methods. In general, calligraphy learners lack the understanding of ‘using brushing’(how to use the brush) especially upraising and pressing the brush. It seems to be due to the fact that the explanation of calligraphy is abstract and that the way of education is focused on ‘result such as the teacher’s sample and textbook rather than process . Since understanding the abstract explanation is almost up to the learners themselves, the beginner often cannot catch the direction of learning despite the consumption of time and will. In addition, it seems to be the cause of the fixation of apprentice educational climate and the inadequacy of calligraphy education environment of public education institutions. The purpose of this study is to suggest a direction for compensate the practical defects of Korean calligraphy education. In conclusion, I think it is ideal to teach all the beginners with a methodology for grasping how to use the brush first. It is more effective to gradually apply the boundary theory for integrating individuality after understanding how to use the brush, and it seems to be able to contribute to the formation of calligraphy culture in the future.
