국문 초록

이 논문은 퇴계의『성학십도(聖學十圖)』에 나타난 서예 수양론적 의미를 고찰하여, 유가 수양론이 서예를 통해 어떻게 실현될 수 있는지를 모색해 보고자 하는 것이다.『聖學十圖』는 퇴계 필생의 역작으로, 방대한 유학의 대요를 본체론, 인식론, 성정론, 수양론을 중심으로 전개하되 그 핵심으로 ‘敬의 수양론’을 제시하고 있다. 퇴계의 서예인식은 유가의 도학적 세계관에 입각한 ‘心法의 예술’로서의 서예이다. 이는 ‘理發을 통한 氣의 주재성[理發而氣隨之]’을 주장하는 퇴계 철학의 서예미학적 발현으로, 書如其人的 측면에서 작가의 인품이 서예에 실현되어야 함을 강조하는 사유이기도 하다. 즉 퇴계의 서예인식을 한마디로 요약하면 ‘경을 바탕으로 한 心法의 서예’로서 ‘書如其人的 書藝認識’을 추구한다는 것이다. 이런 점은 그의『聖學十圖』에서 제시한 수양론과 매우 밀접한 관련을 가지고 있다. 특히『성학십도』의 <小學圖>, <大學圖>, <心統性情圖>, <心學圖>, <敬齋箴圖> 등은 전체가 하나의 맥락을 이루면서 ‘持敬’ 공부를 강조하는데, 이런 점은 서예를 통한 심신 수양의 필요성을 力說한 것으로도 해석할 수 있다. 서예는 부드러운 毛筆의 특성 때문에 운필의 과정에서 整齊·嚴肅의 습관 형성을 요구하며, 이것은 곧 몸과 마음을 하나로 묶어주는 ‘持敬’ 공부의 다른 모습으로도 이해할 수 있다. 아울러 ‘持敬’ 공부를 통해 작가의 의식이 善意志, 본체의식, 인격도야라는 儒家 心學의 과제와 연결된다면, 퇴계가『성학십도』에서 지향하는 유가심성론에 바탕을 둔 예술정신과도 밀접한 관련을 갖는 것으로 이해할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study set out to examine the meanings of the theory of calligraphy cultivation in Toigye s Seonghaksipdo and explore the ways that the Confucian theory of cultivation could be realized through calligraphy. Seonghaksipdo is Toigye s magnum opus, developing the vast gist of Confucianism around the Bonche theory, epistemology, Seongjeong theory, and cultivation theory and proposing the cultivation theory of Gyeong at the core. Toigye regarded calligraphy as art of Simbeop based on the ethical world view of Confucianism. This is based on calligraphic aesthetics in Toigye s philosophy, which argues for Jujaeseong of Gi through Libal[理發而氣隨之]. This thinking also emphasizes that a writer s character should be realized in his calligraphy in the aspect of Seoyeogiin. That is, Toigye s perceptions of calligraphy can be summarized as follows: calligraphy of Simbeop based on Gyeong. He sought after the perception of calligraphy based on Seoyeogiin. This is very closely related to his cultivation theory in his Seonghaksipdo. In particular, Sohakdo , Daehakdo , Simtongseongjeongdo , Simhakdo , and Gyeongjaejamdo in Seonghaksipdo form an overall context and put an emphasis on the study of Jigyeong, which can be interpreted as an emphasis on the need for the cultivation of body and mind through calligraphy. Due to the features of soft writing brushes, calligraphy demands a habit of refinement and solemnity in the process of wielding the brush, which can be understood as another aspect of Jigyeong study to unite the body and mind into one. In addition, a writer s consciousness can be connected to the tasks of practical Confucian ethics including good will, Bonche awareness, and character training through Jigyeong study. This can be understood to have close relations with the spirit of art that pursues grace based on the Confucian theory of nature to which a writer is oriented.
