국문 초록

이 논문은 16세기 전반 런던의 문화적 상황들의 맥락에서 「런던 시민들에 대한 풍자」를 연구한다. 써리의 거리 소동과 투옥의 과정 속에 쓰인 이 시는 당시 양모 산업과 수도원 해산으로 인해 활성화된 부동산 시장 등으로 급격히 커지고 발전해나가던 런던을 영적으로, 도덕적으로 타락한 공간으로 질타한다. 당시 런던의 급성장이 만들 어낸 여러 가지 폐해들에 대한 영적, 도덕적 비판에 더하여, 시인은 어떤 면에서 당시 튜더 왕조와 결탁하여 정치적, 경제적, 사회적 지위를 향상시키고 있던 런던 상인 엘리트 계층을 겨냥하고 있다. 그리하여 이 작품은 시민 계층과 써리의 전통 귀족층의 갈등과 경쟁의식, 그리고 도시로서 국가통치의 모델이 될 런던과 부르주아 계층으로 시민사회를 주도해나갈 시민계층에 대한 예견도, 시인이 의도하지 않았지만 시인의 비판 속에 함축하고 있다.

영문 초록

This article investigates “A Satire Against the Citizens of London,” contextualizing the poem in the political, economic and religious situations of London in the first part of the sixteenth century. Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey denounces London as a spiritually and morally corrupt space, which was radically expanding and prospering mainly due to the profits from the dissolution of the monasteries and the virtually monopolized woolen trade. His attack on London is aimed at the wealthy London merchant elites, who colluded with the Tudor monarchy, advancing their political and social status. Surrey’s satire in a prophetic fervor not only judges their wrongdoings but also inadvertently reveals the conflict between the hereditary nobility and the rising middling class, and between the emergence of London as the future model of the state government and its citizens as the nascent bourgeoisie in the cultural history of England.
