『프랑켄슈타인』의 감정 어휘 및표현에 대한 코퍼스 기반 연구

국문 초록

코퍼스 언어학은 텍스트의 언어적 특징에 주목, 컴퓨터 콘코던스 프로그램을 활용해서 다양한 텍스트의 어휘적 특징을 분석해내는 연구방법이다. 최근 비문학적인 텍스트 중심의 연구에서 벗어나 문학작품의 분석에도 활용되고 있는 코퍼스 언어학은 방대한 전자텍스트를 통해 문학비평의 새로운 지평을 열고 있다. 특히 언어의 데이터 분석에 있어서 빈도수가 높은 어휘는 텍스트의 내용이나 구조에서 중요한 의미를 지니고 있다고볼 수 있다. 이에 본 연구는 코퍼스 분석을 통해서 메리 셸리의 『프랑켄슈타인』의 다양한 어휘적 특징을 평가해보았다. 그 결과 부정적인 감정어휘들이 내러티브의 효과적인 감정통제를 위해서 활용되고 있음을 알 수 있다. 가장 빈도수가 높은 형용사 ‘비참 한’에서부터 정도를 나타내는 다양한 형용사들은 비극적 감정을 극적으로 재현하면서도 인물의 역할에 따라 예측가능하게 활용되어 보편적 감정반응을 유도한다. 시각적 의미를 강조한 지각동사의 높은 빈도수는 내러티브의 시각적 인식에 대한 중요성을 강조한 다. 셸리는 시각적인 형상화를 강조하는 어휘로 추상적인 상황을 구체적이고 개인적인 차원으로 적용해서 이해하도록 이끈다. 코퍼스 분석은 이러한 서사적이고 문체적인 특징을 주관적 인식을 넘어 좀 더 객관적인 방법으로 설명할 수 있는 방법이다.

영문 초록

Corpus linguistic analyses are the techniques, which help demonstrate the linguistic features of various data. Recently corpus linguistic analyses have been used to study the unique characteristics of literary texts as well as non-literary texts. The keyword, considered as the style marker, is the crucial factor to analyze the literary meanings and structural features of the text. This paper illustrates that Mary Shelly tries to control the empathic responses of the characters and readers with specific emotional vocabulary and expressions in Frankenstein. That is, negative emotional words are used to highlight the tragic situations of the characters and elicit universal emotional responses to the specific situations without exception. That is why the readers can easily empathize with the characters in the narrative. Also using the adverbs of degree and verbs of perception, Shelly boosts the negative and tragic sentiments of the characters, and shows the importance of the visual signification in terms of evaluating the others’ feelings. The process of empathy with the concrete imagination is identified by the concordance as well. Most of all, the corpus linguistics can be used as an objective method of interpretation in literary texts.
