충실성이 원본을 배신할 때 — 우리말 번역 『예감은 틀리지 않는다』

국문 초록

본 논문은 직역과 충실성, 다시 말해 단어에 대한 충실성이 오히려 원본을, 원본의 더중요한 부분이라 할 수 있는, 의미, 어조, 스타일, 사용역, 작품성 등을 배신하는 경우를 영국 소설가 줄리안 반즈의 2011년 맨부커상 수상작 The Sense of an Ending을 우리말로 번역한 최세희의 『예감은 틀리지 않는다』(2012)를 통해서 살펴보고자 한다. 그러나 본 논문은 직역의 순기능을 부정하는 것이 아니며, 다만 직역이 때에 따라 오히려 원본을 배반하게 되는 ‘아이러니’에 주목하고자 한다. 직역이 일반적인 한국에서 충실성은 종종 원본의 ‘단어’에 대한 충실성을 의미하는데, 이러한 직역의 문제점은 최세희의 번역에서 크게 네 가지 관점에서 드러난다. 언어차이를 고려하지 않은 번역, 문화차이를 간과한 번역, 어조를 간과한 등장인물 대사의 번역, 독자의 몰입을 방해하는 주석이 그것이다. 그 결과 최세희의 우리말 번역은 잘 읽히지 않을 뿐만 아니라 원본의 의미도 제대로 전달하지 못하고 등장인물도 원본의 것과 멀어져서 원본의 작품 성에 오히려 충실하지 못하게 된다. 특히 작품의 핵심인 1인칭 서술자이자 주인공 토니는 번역에서 원본의 토니보다 훨씬 더 이기적이고 부정적인 인물로 그려진다. 따라서 본 논문은 직역이 오히려 원본을 배신할 수도 있음을 보여주면서, 동시에 번역가가 단순히 단어를 옮기는 일을 넘어 원문의 의미, 어조, 스타일, 작품성에 대한 충실성을 추구하기 위해 다양한 고민을 해야 할 것을 주장한다.

영문 초록

This essay will examine how word for word translation unexpectedly betrays the more important elements in literature such as meaning, tone, style, register and literary quality of the original, by looking at Choi Sehi’s Korean translation of The Sense of an Ending by the English author Julian Barnes. This article intends to pay attention to the ‘irony’ that the translation faithful to words might betray the original. The problem of this literal translation is revealed in four aspects: the translation that does not consider linguistic and cultural differences, one that dismisses the character’s tone and one with extensive footnotes that interrupt the readers’ attention. Therefore, this translation neither reads well nor conveys the meanings of the original. Its characters are so different from those of the original that its literary quality does not parallel the original’s. The first narrator and the protagonist, Tony, seems more selfish and negative than that of the original. Ultimately, this essay urges the translator to translate more proactively and responsibly as a writer by pursuing fidelity to the meaning, tone, style and literary quality of the original beyond the mere activity of translating ‘words.’
