조선 후기 명승 자료에 나타난 경관평가

국문 초록

이 논문은 명승을 다룬 조선 후기의 다양한 자료를 조사하고 분석하여 당시에 경관을 이해하고 평가한 실상을 연구하였다. 먼저 전국 단위의 명승을 다루고 목록을 만든 대표적인 다섯 종의 문헌을 분석하였다. 19세 기에 만들어진 목록은 주관적 평가를 담고 있고, 그 내용이 적지 않은 차이를 보였다. 목록 자료는 당시에 전국적 지명도를 지니고 인기를 누린 명소의 실상이 반영되어 있다. 각종 < 남승도>를 포함하여 개인이 정리한 전국 명승의 목록을 분석하여 지역별 명승의 평판과 가치, 범위와 위계의 실태를 확인하였다. 다음으로 지식인이 남긴 명승 기록을 분석하여 명승을 보는 다양한 시각을 검토하였다. 그중에서 권섭과 남학명의 경우는 깊이와 체계를 갖추어 명승을 관찰하고 평가하였는데 전문적이고 적극적인 비평의식을 보여주었다. 이들의 비평은 함축적이면서도 수준이 높아 조선 후기 명승의 아름다움과 가치를 훌륭하게 표현하였다. 이 연구를 통해 역사문화적으로 정립된 명승의 가치를 드러내며, 명승의 등급을 매기는 그 시기의 기준을 파악하였다. 또한 명승을 보는 조선 후기 특유의 시각을 이해하고, 한반도 전체 명승의 분포와 실태를 확인하였다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the evaluation of scenic spots in the late Joseon Dynasty based on an analysis of the related literature. First, five types of sources containing lists of nationwide scenic spots were analyzed. The lists created in the 19th century show significant differences according to individual preferences, reflecting the nationwide reputation and popularity of attractions among travelers at that time. The reputation, value, scope, and rank of scenic spots in each region were assessed by analyzing various lists of scenic spots compiled by individuals, including several versions of Namseungdo. Next, different perspectives on scenic spots were reviewed based on scholars’ records of them. Among many scholars, Gwon Seop and Nam Hakmyeong showed more depth and sophistication in their approach, and offered constructive criticism on scenic spots. Their appraisals were of high quality and had profound implications, while at the same time capturing the beauty and value of scenic spots in the late Joseon Dynasty. This study highlights the value of scenic spots in a historical and cultural context, and unveils the criteria used to rank them. In addition, it enhances our understanding of perspectives unique to the late Joseon Dynasty, and provides details on the distribution of scenic spots across the Korean Peninsula.
