제닝스의 “무법적 정의”에 기초한 바울과 로마서 이해

국문 초록

본 연구는 테드 제닝스의 바울과 로마서 이해를 그의 “무법적 정의” 사상에 기초해서 분석하고, 그의 신학적 문제를 평가하는 것이다. 테드 제닝스는 신학의 영역에서 바울을 정치 철학적으로 이해하고자 한다. 특별히 바울이 기록한 로마서를 메시아 정치의 틀로 해석함으로써 자신의 해석학적 입장을 견고하게 구축한다. 제닝스의 바울 이해에 있어서 사상적 기초가 된 “무법적 정의”는 “법 밖의 정의”로도 규정되는데, 이는 진정한 정의는 법 너머에 있다는 데리다의 해체적 사유 방식에 기반한 것이다. 바울이 로마서에서 강조한 신적 정의는 법적 정의가 아닌 무법적 정의이며, 하나님에 의해 세워진 메시아적 공동체는 그 무법적 정의의 실현을 위해 메시아 정치, 곧 환대의 정치를 추구해야 한다. 이런 메시아 정치에 기반한 제닝스의 로마서 이해는 기존과는 전혀 다른 차원의 해석의 결과이다. 제닝스는 바울의 로마서를 크게 다섯 부분, 즉 첫째, 부정의한 사회 질서에 대한 비판, 둘째, 부정의한 사회에 드러난 메시아적 정의, 셋째, 메시아를 통한 부정의에서 정의로의 이행, 넷째, 신적 약속의 신실성에 기초한 충실함, 다섯째, 무법적 정의를 구현하는 집합적 삶의 방식들로 분석한다. 이런 제닝스의 로마서 주해는 그리스도교의 정치적 의제를 선도하는 측면에서 강점이 있지만, 신학적 쟁점도 만만치 않다. 특별히 바울의 기별에서 강조되고 있는 그리스도의 십자가와 부활을 통해 이룬 구원의 우주적 차원이 해석학적으로 결여되어 있다. 제닝스의 사상에서 나타난 바울의 로마서 이해는 신적 우주적 정의와 사회 윤리적 정의, 개인적 칭의론과 사회적 정의론을 통합하는 신적 정의의 차원에서 종합을 이루어야 할 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes Theodore W. Jennings’ understanding of Paul and Romans based on his idea of “outlaw justice” to evaluate his theological–hermeneutical issues. Jennings intends to understand Paul politically and philosophically within the realm of theology. In particular, he constructs his hermeneutical position by interpreting the Epistle to the Romans, written by Paul, as the framework of Messianic politics. This “outlaw justice,” which is the basis of Jennings’ understanding of Paul, is also defined as “justice outside the law,” based on Derrida’s deconstructive method of thinking that genuine justice is beyond the law. The divine justice that Paul emphasized in Romans is an extra-legal justice, not a legal justice, and the Messianic community established by God must pursue Messianic politics—the politics of hospitality—for the realization of outlaw justice. Jennings’ understanding of Romans based on Messianic politics is the result of a completely different interpretation from that of traditional theology. Jennings analyzes Paul’s letter to the Romans in five major parts: first, as a critique of a social order of injustice; second, as a Messianic justice manifested in a society of injustice; third, as a transition from injustice to justice through the Messiah; fourth, as faithfulness based on the faithfulness of divine promises; and fifth, as collective ways of life that realize this outlaw justice. Jennings’ interpretation of Romans is right to highlight the political agenda of Christianity, but it also has a theological difficulty. In particular, his understanding of Romans hermeneutically lacks the universal dimension of salvation through Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection, which is emphasized in Paul’s message. Jennings’ understanding of Romans and Paul’s thought needs to be synthesized in terms of a divine justice that integrates divine universal justice with socio-ethical justice, personal justification, and social justice.
