국문 초록

이 연구는 최근 주목받고 있는 프로스포츠의 도시 발전 전략으로서의 의미를 수원시의 프로야구단 유치 사례를 통해 검토하였다. 야구가 가장 인기 있는 프로스포츠로 자리 잡고 있는 우리나라에서 프로야구단의 유치를 통해 도시 발전을 이끌어내려는 자치단체의 전략적 접근은 도전적인 시도로 평가 받을 만하다. 그러나 실제로는 프로야구단의 유치, 그리고 성공적인 정착과 운영에도 불구하고 그것이 도시의 발전으로 이어졌다는 증거는 쉽게 발견되지 않았다. 이러한 현실은 우리나라에서 이루어진 지방자치단체의 프로스포츠에 대한 관심과 투자는 문화에 대한 투자가 그랬던 것처럼 지나치게 낙관적인 기대에 근거하고 있는 것이 아닌가 하는 의문을 제기하게 한다. 이러한 점에 주목한다면 앞으로 이루어질 프로스포츠에 대한 지방자치단체의 도시 발전 전략 차원에서의 투자는 좀 더 면밀한 평가와 분석을 통해 추진되어야 할 것으로 보인다. 그러나 한편으로는 프로스포츠에 대한 투자 역시 문화에 대한 투자와 마찬가지로 경제적 파급 효과 이외의 가치에 주목하여 이루어질 필요도 있다. 문화와 마찬 가지로 프로스포츠 역시 국민들 혹은 주민들에게 경제적 파급 효과 이외의 다양한 측면의 유형과 무형 의 가치를 제공할 수 있을 것이다. 그리고 도시의 발전은 단지 경제적 성장만이 아니라 주민들이 삶 속에서 발견하고 누리는 여러 가치를 통해서도 이루어질 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This study examines the meaning of pro-sports as a city development strategy through the case inviting professional baseball teams in Suwon city. The strategic approach of local government to promote development through attracting professional baseball teams in Korea, where baseball has become one of the most popular professional sports, should be regarded as a challenging attempt. However, in fact, despite the attractiveness of the professional baseball team and successful settling and operation, it was not easy to find evidence that it led to the development of the city. This reality raises the question of whether local governments investment to professional sports in Korea is based on overly optimistic expectations, as did investment in culture. If we pay attention to this point, it is expected that the investment in the development strategy of the local government for the future professional sports should be pursued through more detailed evaluation and analysis. However, on the other hand, investing in professional sports, like investment in culture, needs to be paid attention to values o ther than economic effects. Like culture, professional sports can also provide various kinds of tangible and intangible values t o the people. And the development of the city can be achieved not only by economic growth, but also by the various values that the inhabitants find and enjoy in their lives.
