영문 초록

In this article, we analyze Chijin-no Ai and Tadekuu Mushi, which vividly display the image of contemporary married couple in order to examine what Tanizaki himself regarded as the ideal concept of marriage and family as well as what Tanizaki himself thought were the most important factors for married life. A notable feature of the Tanizaki literature is that married couples seek for love in their married relationship. In general, the man often materializes his ideal love and sexual matters with a woman other than his wife and is often not involved in a sexual relationship with his wife. Tanizaki, however, persistently seeks for love within the context of a married life. The protagonists of his novels think that a married relationship without love (especially sexual matters manifested in love) is meaningless. This is why the characters of his novels sometimes behave unethically. They are not under the pressure of the role of married couples, and they are free from ethical sentiment and responsibility for their children. That is, they do not want to abide by the marriage system if it brings about less happiness. In Tanizaki’s literary works, therefore, “home,” or the space where they exist, is conceptualized as a place where the unleashed married couples enjoy their happiness.
