단경왕후 溫陵을 통해 본 조선후기 封陵의 역사적 의미

국문 초록

이 논문은 단경왕후의 복위와 溫陵 봉릉 과정을 통해 조선후기 폐비 또는 폐세자의 복위를 계기로 이루어진 조선후기 봉릉의 추이와 역사적 의미에 대해 살펴본 것이다. 온릉 봉릉은 영조가 단경왕후 복위를 계기로 왕실의 위엄을 표방하고자 적극 거행한 것으로, 정치적 논쟁을 없애고 “溫陵復位儀”를 새롭게 제정하는 등 국왕 주도의 봉릉 役事를 보여주는 대표적인 사례이다. 이러한 영조의 의도 속에 조영된 온릉은 숙종 연간 봉릉된 莊陵과 思陵의 상설제도를 계승하고 특히 숙종이 왕릉 조영의 모범으로 삼은 厚陵의 검박한 석물제도를 준수하며 건설되었다. 이로써 貞陵→莊陵→思陵으로 이어진 능제와 후릉의 소박한 양식을 토대로 18세기 추봉릉의 제도가 성립되기에 이르렀다. 단경왕후 복위와 온릉 봉릉은 조선후기 國祀의 정비와 왕릉 제도의 한 흐름을 형성했다는 점에서 의의를 찾을 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the processing and historical significance of recovering the throne focused on one of the Joseon royal tombs, Onneung (溫陵), the tomb of Queen Dowager Dangyeong (端敬王后, 1487∼1557). Queen Dowager Dangyeong entered the palace as a first wife of King Jungjong (中宗), however, as her father Shin Su-geun forcefully opposed Jungjong`s coup for the throne, she was forced to dethroned and never came back to the palace. After her death, her grave was built in humble shape that definitely showed she was not in the line of royal pedigree. Though Queen Dowager Dangyeong`s deposition had caused a long-term political disputes between successive kings and officials, King Yeongjo tried to restored Queen Dangyeong`s throne, finally he commanded to restore her original position as a Queen and to reconstruct her grave as a shape of royal tomb in 1739. Hoping to concrete his royalty from King Sukjong, Yeongjo forced to recover the Queen`s dethrone despite of officials` opposition. Following the Queen`s restoration, her sprit tablet was kept in the royal shrine and her tomb entitled “Onneung” was reconstructed. The rebuilding Onneung is a key to understand King Yeongjo`s political intention to show publically his royal authority to officials.
