아가에 등장하는 중의적 표현들(double entendres)에 대한 연구

국문 초록

남녀의 성애를 다룬 노래인 아가가 거룩한 정경에 포함될 수 있었던 배경에는 여러 가지 요소가 있었을 것이다. 그러나 무엇보다도 아가가 남녀의 사랑을 은밀하고 모호하게 중의적 표현양식(double entendres)을 사용하여 말하면서 알레고리적 해석의 가능성을 열어둔 공이 크다고 볼 수 있다. 그러므로 아가의 내용을 제대로 이해하기 위해서는 아가의 중의적 표현법 속에 숨은 의미를 발견하는 것이 필수적이다. 아가의 저자는 다양한 비유와 상징， 함축적 어휘 선택과 언어유희 등을 통하여 표면적으로는 낭만적이고 목가적인 노래들 속에 매우 농도 짙은 남녀의 사랑의 행위들을 감추어 놓았다. 본 연구는 아가의 저자가 노래하고자 하는 바가 남녀의 사랑이라는 사실을 중의적 표현들의 의미 분석을 통하여 더욱 확실하고 구체적으로 밝혔다. 따라서 본 논고의 연구결과는 아가를 더 이상 알레고리적으로 해석하는 것을 어렵게 만듦과 동시에， 아가를 근본적으로 남녀의 사랑노래로 이해하는 거의 모든 현대의 주석가들의 견해를 뒷받침한다. 일부 학자들은 아가를 고대의 포르노그래피 작품처럼 생각하기도 하지만 이는 사실과 다르다. 아가에는 직설적이고 외설적인 성적 표현들은 거의 나타나지 않는다. 아가는 오히려 남녀의 헌신적이고 배타적인 사랑을 노래하며 자유연애나 무분별한 성적 행위들에 대하여 경고하고 있다. 아가는 우리로 하여금 참된 사랑의 의미를 발견하고 서로를 신뢰하도록 하는 안내서의 역할을 한다고 볼 수 있다.

영문 초록

One of the mysteries in the process of canonization is how such a secular book as the Song of Song ended up being part of the sacred canon. Along with Proverbs, Qoheleth, Ezekiel, and Esther, the Song of Songs was one of the biblical books whose canonical status was disputed. Many factors may have contributed to the acceptance of Canticles into the canon. The alleged Solomonic authors hip of the book must have played a role. In addition, attempts were made to interpret the whole book as an allegory for God's love for the people of Israel. Most importantly, were it not for the author’s use of double entendres in order to eschew explicit references to sexual activities, the book would have remainedoutside the canon until these days. Therefore the importance of the double entendres in the Song of Songs should not be underestimated. It is shown that the double entendres included in this essay actually depict sexual encounters. Thus the results of this study militate against the conventional Jewish-Christian allegorical interpretation, and at the same time, support the views of most modern commentators who see the very nature of the Song of Songs as ancient love songs. The Song of Songs has often been considered pornographic. But this view is far off the mark. The book never praises free love or explicitly describes sexual intercourse. It never uses vulgar and cheap language. Instead, the Song issues a warning about the danger of immature love and promiscuous sexual practices. The book is intended for guiding lovers to find the true meaning of love and exhorting them to be committed to each other. A thorough investigation of double entendres in the Song of Songs will shed more light on the issue of the unity of the songs . It is also hoped that future studies will examine double entendres found in other books of the Hebrew Bible.
