야만에서 존중으로

국문 초록

본 논문은 1910년 에딘버러 세계선교사대회의 보고서에 나타난 선구 선교사들의 비서구 문명에 대한 인식을 검토하고, 지난 2010년 에딘버러 백주년 선교대회에 이르러 그러한 문명적 인식이 어떻게 변화하게 되었는가를 고찰하는데 목적이 있다. 특히, 본 논문에서는 19세기 후반 서구 선교사들이 담지하고 있던 선교적 문명론에 큰 영향을 미친 스코틀랜드 계몽주의의 문명관을 살펴봄과 아울러, 비서구 문명에 대한 개신교 선교와 선교 이론이 제국주의라는 당대의 정치적 이데올로기와 공모적 관계 속에서 구체화되는 과정을 논구하고자 한다. 또한 과거 19세기 개신교 선교가 인종주의, 자문화중심주의, 유럽중심주의에 근거한 문명의 계층적 개념 속에서 자신의 선교 이데올로기를 정당화해 왔음을 비판적으로 검토하고자 한다. 고서 “선교와 정부”를 중점적으로 살펴보면서, 19세기와 20세기 초 비서구 분명에 대한 선구 선교사들의 계층적 인식이 다음과 같은 몇 가지 점에서 공통적인 특징을 보여주었음을 규명하고자 한다. 1) 서구 문명과 비서구 문명의 이원론적 인식 틀, 2) 선교사 권력과 세속 권력(가령, 제국주의 혹은 식민주의 체제)과의 긴밀한 유착관계, 그리고 3) 선교지 문명에 대한 서구 선교사들의 야만적 인식으로 인한 토착민들과의 상호 배움과 존중의 결여. 하지만, 지난 2010년 에딘버러 백주년 선교대회의 제4주제 연구서 “선교와 권력”은 과거 백 년 전 대회에서 견지되었던 선교지 문명에 대한 인식 틀이 오늘날의 변화하는 상황 속에서 매우 급격하게 전환되었음을 보여주고 있다. 이 대회에서 선교지 문명에 대한 인식은 다음과 같은 새로운 특징을 나타내고 있다. 1) 서구 문명의 우월성과 비서구 문명의 열등성이라는 이원론적 인식 틀의 극복과 해체, 2) 선교지 문화와 전통에 대한 상호 존중과 대화의 필요성, 그리고 3) 선교와 인간 정체성의 본질이 어느 특정한 인간이나 사회의 문명 상태에 의해서가 아닌 그리스도의 진리가 제시하는 다양한 문화적 형태와 가치를 통해서 이해되어야 한다는 점.

영문 초록

This article aims to examine the perceptions of non-Western civilization as presented by the reports from the Edinburgh 1910 World Missionary Conference and then to investigate the paradigm shift at the Edinburgh 2010 World Mission Conference. In particular, this paper traces how the theory of missionary civilization that European missionaries of the late 19th century asserted was rooted in the Scottish Enlightenment and also explores that the Protestant mission and its theory on non-Western civilization materialized in the conspiratorial link of the church to British imperialism. Furthermore, it is critically debated that the Protestant mission, in a conception of the hierarchy of civilization, justified its own missionary business that was founded upon racism, ethnocentrism, and European supremacy. Concretely, Report VII of “ Missions and Governments" published for the 1910 Conference proves that the hierarchical perception of Western missionary societies on the non-Western civilization was basically common and unchangeable. The documents were characterized as 1) the dualistic framework of Western and non-Western civilization, 2) the back-scratching alliance of missionary powers and secular powers (e.g. imperialist and colonialist structure), and 3) the unawareness of the mutual learning from and respect for native peoples due to the uncivilized recognition of Western missionaries to mission-field civilization. One hundred years after the old Conference, however, Study Theme IV, “Mission and Power" of the Edinburgh 2010 Mission Conference shows the radically changed viewpoints on today's missionary civilization in the transforming context. The new Conference suggests a new paradigm in regards to mission-field civilization; 1) the overcoming of dualism of superiority of Western civilization and inferiority of the non-Western one, 2) the necessity of reciprocal respect for and dialogue with mission-field culture and tradition, and 3) the viewpoint that the nature
